RIP William Friedkin

He made plenty of good theatre adaptations - not just TBITB and Killer Joe, but also Bug and a TV version of 12 Angry Men he also collaborated with Harold Pinter on The Birthday Party and has a new adaptation of The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial slated to premiere at this year's Venice Film Festival.

He'll be sorely missed. RIP.

The French Connection, The Exorcist, The Boys in the Band,The Night they Raided Minskys. Rest in Peace Mr. Friedkin. Thank you for making our pulse race during the chase scene in Connection, scareing the crap of us in Exorcist, causing introspection with Boys, and bringing a smile to our faces with Minsky, which was the great Bert Lahr's final film.

Should have directed the AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY film to complete his Tracy Letts trilogy. Wonder if he was ever approached or if Harvey Weinstein wanted to specifically go with a studio hack he could control?

Yes anyone but John Wells who was primarily a showrunner/writer/producer for television.

I'm certain if the unmentionable HW would have approached William Friedkin, Mrs Friedkin (Sherry Lansing) would have warned him off.

Friedkin himself was no soft touch when it came to antagonizing actors so I imagine either Streep or Roberts--two actors who have been on cruise control for at least 15 years and could use a kick in the ass--put an end to any idea he would be involved.

You raise a valid and interesting and thought provoking point. Suppose someone beside HW,who had so many people worshipping the ground he slithered on even those Brother Bob was the brains and HW the brawn, secured the rights. Say if American Playhouse was still around and had the rights,or an adventurous indie did and they engaged Friedkin to direct a film with the original cast, as he did with The Boys in the Band, it might have been wonderful.
