Ragtime

Posted: 9/11/04 at 2:57amI believe RAGTIME is one of the greatest American Musicals. It was, unfortunately, ruined by the Garth Drabinsky/Livent fiasco and has a bit of bad history behind it. However, I feel that in a few years it will be revived and get it’s proper respect.

Posted: 9/11/04 at 9:30amRagtime was buried at the Tony Awards by Lion King. In any other year, it would have emerged as the best in many categories. I was close to that show in many ways, which I will not mention here. It was an exciting first show for the new Ford Center, now home to 42nd St. Ragtime did quite well attracting an audience but not well enough to recoup the millions lost in the Livent scandal. That matteris still being sorted out in the courts! The NYC Opera should certainly do a full blown production of Ragtime. Perhaps Stokes, Audra, Marin and some others in the original cast could be reunited for that production?

Posted: 9/11/04 at 2:38pmRagtime is a wonderful example of a show with a depressing plot having great, upbeat music and really keeping the audience interested. That's what I didn't like about Le Mis. After the 15th ballad or so, I just started to nod off. I love shows like Ragtime with variety and excitement in their score, not endless songs that go on forever. I'm so sorry it closed so early, it deserved a lot more.

I love love love Ragtime. I never had the opportunity to see BSM, and Marin, Peter, Audra in it...but I'm sure it was just as perfect as the recording makes it sound.
As for disc 2...I like the Booker T Washington song.
"look what you've done....
think of your son"

Posted: 9/11/04 at 5:21pmWow, I love how the Epilogue is done. The characters explain what they actually end up doing later in life...like narrators, but telling about themselves. Very cool.

Posted: 9/11/04 at 5:25pmThey narrate for themselves in the Prologue also, but you don't know the characters at that point when you're listening to the cd.

Posted: 9/11/04 at 5:36pmPlanning on reading it soon. I heard there was a lot that was taken out of the show, and the movie as well. It would probably take a mini-series to have everything from the book included.
