RAGTIME is definitely one of my top three favorite musicals of all time. I remember someone saying, "Oh, I saw Ragtime years ago--I like it..." and I was like, "Oh, gosh! I love it!" and rambled off: "Didn't you love when...?" and "Wasn't this so beautiful...?" and he was like, "Wow, I'd forgotten so much about it."
What I appreciate about RAGTIME is one of the same things I appreciate about CAROLINE, or CHANGE: overall it's a pretty sad musical that is completely unapologetic for the story that it's telling. The trials and tribulations of blacks, immigrants, women, and stout-hearted young men of 1906 is not a pretty story to tell...But this production is magnificant.
I would have to say my favorite character is Younger Brother; I'd love to play him one day. North Carolina Theatre just did RAGTIME not too long ago with Norm Lewis (there have been some posts on here about it) and it got AMAZING reviews throughout the Triangle, considered to be one of the best theatre events of the year. I, unfortunately, had to miss it.
Favorite songs:
* Your Daddy's Son
* Journey On
* Sarah Brown Eyes
* He Wanted to Say
* The Night That Goldman Spoke...
* Wheels of a Dream
* Make Them Hear You
* New Music
* Back To Before
Goodness me, I love it. More RAGTIME appreciation!! It's so sad to me when beautiful shows just fizzle out...or never make it to B'way in the first place...
Oh well. Such is life, I suppose.

Yeah I can't pick just one song. So here's the list.
~Back To Before-Marin Mazzie in that song=perfection
~Our Children
~Goodbye My Love/Journey On-They just fit together so perfectly
~Make Them Hear You
~Your Daddy's Son
~Sarah Brown Eyes
~The dance section of Gettin' Ready Rag
~ New Music-favorite part of the sung is when Coalhouse says "Coon songs are made for minstrel shows. White men sing them in black face. This is called Ragtime...."and the little piano solo right there. Brilliant!
This is my all time favorite show. I can't help but think about how simply breathtaking it is every time I listen to it. My local community theatre is doing it next year and I cannot wait!

One of my favorite moments in Ragtime is "The Night That Goldman Spoke at Union Square." It's not necessarily the best stand-alone song, but it's brilliant in its use of music to dramatize the scene -- something the whole show does well.
"Till We Reach That Day" is a phenomenal first act finale, too...right up there with "Tonight: Reprise" from West Side Story and "One Day More" from Les Miserables.

Where the heck has Steven Sutcliffe gone? He played Mother's Younger Brother--I thought he was amazing, one of my favorites. And, in looking him up on IBDB.com, Ragtime is the only show he's done on Broadway...
Anyone have any dish?

I went to a friend's regional production knowing NOTHING about the show, then bought the CD the next day...what a wonderful show. My favorite little moments are:
- the hummed part right at the beginning of Your Daddy's Son
- He Wanted To Say. ahhh
- that one verse Audra does on the CD with amazing emotion beginning with "play that melody..." over BSM
I think I'm going to go listen to it now...

Posted: 1/3/05 at 4:13pmI seem to like the entire score, but especially like, the opening number, Wheels of a Dream, not sure of the name of this one, but the song where Sarah and Coalhouse reunite, Til We Reach That Day, and Back to Before
