I dont think that means anything that the discount code is until the 14th. I hope ticket sales pick up and it will stay open. I think it was wed, denzel was looking at the theater.

That doesn't mean anything. A show can close whenever.

^Exactly. Just like the date to which tickets are available at the moment isn't an indication. For this or ANY show.

It is odd, however, that the discount expires on a Wednesday.

It expires on 1/14/2010 which is a Thursday. That Friday is the Martin Luther King long weekend which means crowds on Broadway again following the holidays.

they've had discount codes through the 14th (excluding the holidaze!) for some time now ... a better question might be: why just until the 14th? is there a convention in town for the second half of january???

Um, just because? It's not that unusual for a discount code to run for a little over a month, then release a new one before the other one expires (provided it is necessary).

yeah, that's one possible explanation.

however, consider that:

- half of the shows currently offering discounts on playbill.com have discounts at least through janauary 31st, and the percentage shoots over 2/3 when you filter out the shows closing in early january.

- the ragtime discount in question is fairly recent (last two weeks or so), meaning its duration is more limited than those others

- january is broadway's fallowest month ... there's not a lot of logic to running a promotion only halfway through the month (and, indeed, i don't think that any of the other playbill.com discounts for "ongoing" shows end mid-month)

- it seems likely ragtime has an acute need to generate future sales ... discounts with a longer duration would only help that

so, yeah, maybe it's caprice that caused the producers to settle on the 14th, but maybe it's something more, too.
