Randi Graff not nominated for fantine, but Anne wins?

^ She had made the decision not to do Les Mis before Anything Goes came into the picture though. I'm glad she didn't do Les Mis here, because I love her as Reno so much.

For those of you who care about those things, and I know some of you do ...

It's Randy with a Y, not Randi with an I
'Cause Randi with an I, goes, "I wasn't even nominated!"
"Jaws is the Citizen Kane of movies."

LOL

She was later nominated and won for the role she deserved, so it all worked out okay.

Ummm. Am I the one who's confused here? I thought Ann was in a movie and the others were on stage. If I'm not mistaken Randi and Patti were not nominated for Oscars and Anne was not nominated for a Tony. What am I missing here? Or are you really trying to compare Oscar awards with Tonys? How silly if you are.

I think we all just chose to ignore the silly false comparison and move on with our own discussion.

It was generally thought that Graff gave a subpar Fantine. She may have been the only lead not nominated for a Tony that year. I saw her and I was left cold.

Though I came to LOVE her soon after in every single other thing I saw her in.

I guess I will forever be alone in thinking Anne Hathaway was uninspired and one-note in LES MIZ. Didn't even think she deserved to be nominated. Sorry, but that's just my opinion.

I haven't heard the OBCR of Les Miz in at least 20 years--the only one I own or listen to is the OLCR, but judging from these two clips, she does seem sorta uninspired (though by no means bad) in her big moment. Of course she's on the Donahue Show (apparently some tribute to musicals that included Cats?) so...

Randy on Donahue http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pOwOCZrqVo

Just for comparison here's Patti (albeit five or so years after she performed the role) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M4lgq_aEaM

The singing is definitely good but uninspired, but Randy Graff looks about a million times better in that wig than Patti. (Although the wig is also about a million times better than Patti's was.)

To be fair, it's not that hard to look better than Patti in that wig.
I forgot about Raff's singing during "Fantine's Death," her "waaaake" is, in fact, grating.
I agree with the poster who said she was simply miscast, as she proved in pretty much everything else she's been in, she's insanely talented.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

Phil Donahue would look better in that wig than Patti.

In both this and the "Tonight Show" clip, her high belt notes are really unsteady. I recall a friend who played for the auditions saying they kept making all the Fantine candidates sing it like LuPone. "No, belt that! Belt it. Patti did!"

Graff is a wonderful singer (and actor), but I think her Fantine suffered from her being asked to replicate someone else's performance.

Graff said in her Obsessed! interview that she didn't have those top notes, but they just figured she'd work up to them. Which is probably the reason her high belt notes sound really unsteady.

Now, Patti has said that she thought the Broadway company was asked to be a carbon copy of the London production, and I think someone here said it was all sour grapes on her part. This is great corroborating evidence for Patti.

oscar winners for musical roles originated on Broadway:

1956: Yul Brynner (lead), The King and I, The King, won tony award (featured)

1961: Rita Moreno (supporting), Anita
George Chakiris (supporting), Bernardo
West Side Story
roles created by Chita Rivera and Ken Le Roy, whom were not - yup, that's right, NOT! - nominated for tonys, In revivals, Debbie Allen would be nominated and Karen Olivo would win a tony for their Anitas. (how bizarre that the Anita with the least tony love is the first and foremost!)

1964: Rex Harrison (lead), Henry Higgins, My Fair Lady, won tony (lead)

1968: Barbra Streisand (lead), Fanny Brice, Funny Girl, nominated but didn't win tony (lead)

1972: Liza Minnelli (lead), Sally Bowles
Joel Grey (supporting), Emcee; Cabaret
roles created by Jill Haworth (not nominated for tony) and Joel Grey (won tony, featured): the roles would later win tonys for Natasha Richarson and Alan Cumming (leads); Alyson Reed's Sally would receive a tony nomination for an earlier revival (in which Grey had once again played the Emcee, and so, was not eligible for a nomination)

2002: Catherine Zeta Jones (supporting), Velma Kelly, Chicago
role created by Chita Rivera who was nominated for but did not win the tony (lead), Bebe Newirth would win a tony (lead) for the revival

2006: Jennifer Hudson (supporting), Effie White, Dreamgirls

role created on Broadway by Randy Graff, not nominated for the tony

William Hurt/Brent Carver as Molina in Kiss of the Spider Woman (leads)

I dissagree _I liked Randy I thought she sang it pretty similar with a prettier sound....-Patti always sounds like Evita even as Fantine and Rose to me..No disrespect I just love Patti as Evita and can never get that out of my head... Laurie Beachman had one of the best voices for broadway she killed it in Cats and again in Les Miz..shame she passed so soon..her albums are amazing.!!

Unless I"m mistaken, they were nominated (or not nominated) for two different awards. In Les Mis, none of the female roles can really be considered "lead" roles. None of them really carry many elements of the story on their back. In the sense of the movie, Fantine's character was much more prevalent in driving the plot of the beginning, much more than Cosette or 'Ponine or Madame T do in their respective parts of the story. I don't think the fact that Randi was not nominated had anything to do with her, but with the fact that two different award committees may have felt differently about the role's importance to the show itself.
