I can only go by my experiences in the UK, but here they link originality with enthusiasm, creativity, and a general good first impression.

Psychologically, the panel will be more open to your performance if they aren't thinking "Not this song AGAIN!". Their focus will be on every aspect of your performance.

Performing a "less well-known" song also shows that you are aware of (and have experienced) a theatrical world outside Broadway's top-ten shows. Lol. It shows you've really looked at what you're singing, at the character etc. And it shows you've done your research.

Finally, and one of the biggest plus points of singing a "rarer" song, You will not be compared to previous performers.

Example: sing something from, say, Les Mis - let's use BRING HIM HOME for this example. You're automatically setting yourself up for comparison with professional Valjeans - Colm Wilkinson, Gary Morris etc - as well as with all the dozens of people who've sung it for that panel previously.

Sing something from an older, less well-known show (let's say FATE, from Kismet) and you've got the panel's interest focused on you. They're not subconsciously thinking "Well he's not as good as..." - they're thinking "listen to that boy sing!".

I'd go with JOHANNA or ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE (you can really make something of that bridge) & maybe YOU'RE NOTHING WITHOUT ME (It's a duet in the show, but it does work as a solo) or YOU'VE BEEN CAREFULLY TAUGHT.

"I Can See It" is not considered a ballad.

"Extraordinary" is a good audition piece if you use the second half of the song when it picks up, especially when he hits the A ("The fact that I'm different/That's easy to see/So why doesn't anyone know it but me").

And if she'll say, "My darling, I'm yours!" I'll throw away my striped tie and my best pressed tweed, all I really need is the girl...
