His name was tossed around quite a bit on the boards when they were casting the "revival." But it went something like:
"How about this role?"
"He's too old."
"And this one?"
"Nope, he's too young."
"And the other dude?"
"Nope, that wouldn't work either."
The general consensus was that he didn't quite fit any of the male roles in the show; I don't know Les Mis well enough to be really give an educated weigh-in on which roles would or wouldn't work for him, but there are definitely songs in that score I wouldn't hate to hear him sing.

Apparently I'm not the only one who didn't get it.
And really, given that I practically fell asleep when I saw the original run, I wouldn't expect myself to get a Les Mis joke. But, CPD, if I were you, I wouldn't regard myself as being in a place to comment about people not "getting" things.

Isn't that kind of how the revival turned out, anyway?

Posted: 8/10/07 at 8:40pmIronically, yes. Although I guess you could argue that Alex Gemignani (hell if I ever learn to spell that right) looks much older than he actually is. I was shocked to learn how young he is, actually.

re: Raul Esparza as Jean Valjean#14
Posted: 8/10/07 at 10:26pmLes Mis? No. What did I say to make you think that? I said his name was tossed around on the boards, meaning by people here on BWW.
re: Raul Esparza as Jean Valjean#15
Posted: 8/10/07 at 10:28pmOh,sorry. There was a time when "on the boards" meant on/about Broadway.
re: Raul Esparza as Jean Valjean#16
Posted: 8/10/07 at 10:31pmI know. I thought given that we were having the discussion ON the message board that'd have been implied, but point taken.

We can't all be as brilliant as you.
Or as whatever as you.

I admit that I should have been clearer, so your post is therefore invalid.
But by all means, let's have a repeat of last night.

I agree with the sentiment that he really doesn't fit any of the charecters well.
Just because someone is a good actor, doesn't mean they are right for every role.

Posted: 8/10/07 at 10:57pmHe isn't a good enough singer. I cringe at the thought of him singing some of those high notes.
