Raul Esparza to perform at Westport Playhouse Gala

I read this on Raul's myspace. Nothing on his website yet though - although that hasn't been updated since May.

Here's the info.....

Angela Landsbury, Bernadette Peters, Laura Benanti, Raul Esparza and Steven Pasquale will be featured at the Sept. 15 annual gala benefit at the Westport Playhouse. Julia Roberts will host the fundraising event, which will include a tribute to Angela Landsbury. Benefit tickets are $2000. A limited number of performance only tickets are still available at $600. That is not Raúl's Myspace page, he doesn't have one. That is just a fan page someone created. Raúl knows nothing about it and has no connection to it.

This is their big annual fundraiser, and they need to raise a LOT of money. They just renovated the theater to the tune of over thirty million dollars. So even if they sell every one of the 578 seats in the theater at $5K each, that's still less than three million gross, which will be even less after expenses. They can't afford to sell "affordable" tickets.

I found the "he knows nothing about it" line a little extreme. Having no official connection to the page doesn't mean he doesn't go and check it out once and awhile, just to see what his fans are saying.

humbug - have you been there yet? I haven't seen Westport Playhouse since its prior incarnation as a slightly time-worn summer theater barn!
