jczelyph, it really isn't as bad as you think. At most you are waiting 30 minutes. The Lottery was a result from "RENT". Jonathan Larson wanted "RENT" to be accessible to everyone, so they developed a policy that the first row (two rows??) of the theatre would be sold day of show to the first twenty (or however many they set aside) people when the box office opens. Well, people started camping out so they switched to the lottery (keep in mind RENT was always sold-out). Shows that have become equally as popular have done the same (well, DRS the notable exception, still shows up on TKTS, as does Hairspray from time to time). "Hairspray" is the only show that has a lottery with the seats in the rear Mezzanine, so practically no one goes to that one. It's really a way to get good seats inexpensively. But the shows that do it (save DRS) are extremely popular and generallt always sold-out.

Also. it's called "rush" because they only sell a certain number of seats same day and right at box office opening. So you need to "rush" to the theatre to get them before they sell out. Hope that explains it.
