Posted: 12/13/04 at 10:26amThe only show I've ever worked on that I hated unconditionally. The only plus is that the movie is so much worse.

Some other people feel differently.
Personally, I think it's a great showcase for Mary-Louise Parker, and I really responded to the play's offbeat world, and sense of societal anxiety. The other women in the production, Debra Monk, Olga Merediz and Rosie Perez, are also especially terrific.
It was written by Lucas as a way of trying to come to grips with friends and loved ones succumbing to AIDS all around him. But in post-September 11th New York, I feel it has a different resonance. Sometimes, you have to struggle with the inexplicable reasons of why bad things happen to you throughout your life, and the play's lead character, Rachel, evolves from a flighty vapid housewife, to a mature woman. The shift that occurs late in the play through to the last scene is also particularly moving.
To me, if A Doll's House and Candide got married, Reckless would be their child. Definitely not for everyone, but 'useless' and 'slight' it's not.

Posted: 12/13/04 at 11:18amI'm really looking forward to seeing it on Wednesday. It's been awhile since I've seen a really good production of a play.

I saw it last Friday and liked it a lot. You have to suspend the expectation that the story will unfold in a linear fashion. I thought the performances were terrific. And I loved the set design, which I can only come up with the word "iconic" to describe.
To be fair, I'm not sure that the story that was written wast the same story I perceived, but I found a lot to relate to. And that's kind of the point, isn't it?
