I could use some advice: Should I go for the tv soundtrack or the LA cast recording of this show? Also, I'd be curious to hear opinions in general on the quality of this score.
Okay, well, if you like campy, rollicking romps with catchy hooks and witty lyrics, you'll enjoy REEFER MADNESS. You'll have to go through Hell and high water to find an Original Cast Recording considering they charge MUCHO MUCHO $ for them on eBay and Amazon. (Used, by the way - none are new). You lucked out there. The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is solid, though, too. Just go adn get the DVD! That's your best bet. You'll enjoy ALL aspects of the show...
I have the original LA cast. It doesn't have the new songs that were written for the Off-Broadway production "Lonely Pew", "Murder" and "The Brownie Song" and it doesn't have "Mary Jane/Mary Lane" which was written for the film and is now in the stage version, but it does have the song that was cut from the film and subsequently the final licensable script version "Dead Old Man". There's also The act one finale and the act two opening which are nice to hear, a reprise of "Listen to Jesus Jimmy" that was cut from the film, and a bonus track called "We Know Best" that was cut from the stage version all together, but other than that stuff the movie soundtrack is your best bet which apparently is being released soon.
I heard the movie soundtrack is going to be released as a double with a re-release of the LA recording. I tried to order the LA (from the writers' site) and he e-mailed back saying it would be out in a few months, but he would sell me a "legal" bootleg for $10
Please be patient. We are basically waiting on one agency to approve one contract. It's amazing how things can get held up!
