Regional Les Mis Productions?

I was just wondering if anyone knew what the likelihood could be that Toronto might be able to put on a Regional Les Mis production now that the tour has closed and it has closed on Broadway?

Plenty of cities that have had Les Miz sit-downs have had regional productions in that area.

The issue is whether one of the regional companies (IE CanStage, the most likely candidate) would do it.

Do you mean regional? or Community Theatre?

We have several excellent community theatre companies in the area. Last season Meadowvale theatre did a fine production of MISS SAIGON. This fall they are doing SWEENEY TODD. So a production of LES MIZ is not an impossibility.

We don't have regionals here that generally do large scale musicals. Canstage goes for smaller shows (LITTLE SHOP, AIN'T MISBEHAVIN') when they do commercial musicals.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Sometimes Canstage will do bigger works. Their URINETOWN (essentially purchasing the NY production) and their HAIR were big productions. And lets not forget their SWEENY TODD a few years ago.

Yes but CanStage co-produced Sweeney with a Vancouver theatre - where it received a warmer reception. And weren't both Hair and Urinetown co-produced with Aubrey Dan before he started his own series of shows?

Yes, and Ain't Misbehavin'.

What has CanStage announced as their "big" musical next season? I forget...

re: Regional Les Mis Productions?

There is no musical in this upcoming season. Berkeley is being turned into a space for smaller theatre to co-produce (Blackbird, Wild Dogs and Hard Sell). The mainspace (Bluma) opens Frost/Nixon shortly and will follow that up with It's a Wonderful Life, a Southern version of Miss Julie (Summer something), one other play and it closes with Doubt.

Ah, for some reason I though It's A Wonderful Life was a musical.

The show I forgot was Shirley Valentine.

And having just read the press release for It's a Wonderful Life, it is being staged as a live radio show. Almost the actors can sing and dance (and it's being directed by Donna Feore) but it would seem they won't be required to use that musical training.

Speaking of Berkeley, there is going to be a production of A New Brain there early in 2009, unaffiliated with CanStage.

re: Regional Les Mis Productions?

Yup, a rental (just as Theatre Francais or Obsidian do). But I'm looking forward to A New Brain.

Me, too, toddsblade. Their productions have been excellent.
