I was on a regional theater database and noticed some production stills for a reputable regional theater company's upcoming production of Sweeney Todd. From the production stills it was incredibly clear they were recreating the John Doyle production from the small cast to the female as Pirelli to the pretty much exact reproductions of the costumes and make up. This made me wonder: Are they selling the rights to the John Doyle production? Do you now have an option of original Sweeney Todd or revival Sweeney Todd?
Doubt it.
Did Doyle change the script in any way? If he didn't, a theater can choose to stage the show however they choose to. Plenty of other productions bogart imagery from other productions. It only gets you in trouble if John Carraffa was involved originally :)
If they're using the arrangments used in the Doyle version, (assuming they're different than what's already offered) they'd pay an extra fee for that.
Doyle made minor cuts to the script.
Which company?
