Maybe they'll do the original justice and maybe they won't- no one knows yet. I don't mind that they're doing this- I just hope that they do the original RENT justice re: Rent -for an Ipod generation?

Grown-ups never understand anything for themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them. Antoine de Saint-Exupery, "The Little Prince", 1943

Disrespect to Larson?

How is this any different to the way that classic plays and operas are re staged and reconceived over the years?

Is Carmen Jones disrespecting Bizet?

Wait and see. It obviously has been granted the approval of the Larsson estate. If things stay static you get the awfully stale LesMis and Blood Brothers which clog up the West End year on year....

Maybe they'll go REALLY original. Like, I think "Do a Little Business" would go over so well.

Nothing could have disrespected Larson as much as that movie did.

As if he knew what Larson had in mind at the time.

Well, I would have hoped Larson has still been doing revisions. Chunks of that book are an unwieldy mess and some of the lyrics are downright embarrassing (and this is coming from a huge fan of the stage version).

I just don't get the big deal. Half the time people piss and moan about ReNt being dated. I don't see what the problem is here. If it fails, it fails. I, for one, wish I could see this, though. I'm really curious to see what they do with it.

Agreed. That, and some of the lazy, careless, phoned-in performances I've seen on stage.

I do always get nervous for these kinds of concept productions, but I'd see it before writing it off. I just hope they still connect with themes in the show. Sometimes I see concept productions that don't even attempt to connect with why the original piece exists to begin with, which makes no sense to me.

I hesitated at the phrase 'pop opera' - what, we don't have rock music today anymore or something? - but I think it sounds promising. After all, Rent managed to make a story set in the 1830s Paris work in modern day NY. Maybe they can manage to change the show a bit successfully.

Plus, I would love it if there was a new recording of Rent with different people. I love the OBC and movie soundtrack but I'd love to hear other people as well.

It is annoying though that the woman who plays Mimi is pale as a ghost though.

In response to what uncageg said about the director, Michael Grief states in the coffee table book that him and the rest of the creative team had a difficult time because they were sometimes inclined not to change anything out of respect to Jonathon's memory and because they just didn't know what changes to make but in the end they did their best to be objective and make the edits and changes they felt that Jonathon would have wanted.
