Posted: 11/7/05 at 5:48pmi've always thought, and its kinda sad that i've thought about this.. but i think about theatre a lot-- but if i had to play any character in RENT it would be Mimi, and I always thought that if I was Mimi i would be so afraid of falling of the bar during out tonight.

I've never seen her fall off the bar, but I have seen her kick herself in the face as she was coming down the steps...
I have actually tried to stand on a bar in heels like that, and it actually is not that hard to balance. If you have high enough heels, you just have to be careful.

Posted: 11/7/05 at 6:16pmThe boots that Mimi wears have a groove cut into the soles that helps her "grip" the bar. They are custom made so that she can do that bar scene.

Kelley is somewhat right. All of Mimi's giraffe print boots are custom made for each actor and are very expensive. The curve of the heel into the vamp is custom designed to mold perfectly to that of the bars on her catwalk. Though no one has ever fallen, there have been very close calls on several occasions at The Nederlander.

Posted: 11/8/05 at 2:35pmI saw Mel B. in one of her first weeks, and she didn't actually fall, but it took her three tries to get balanced up. She kept missing the bar with her heel. She covered it well, but it was definately noticable. That was the least of the problems with her performance!
