Posted: 12/31/04 at 2:33pmI have both... I got the highlights after my first time, but as I became more familiar with the show, I realized I needed to own the full OBCR. Definitely go with that one. It fills in a lot of the gaps, and you'll probably like it better.

Yeah...
and if you haven't seen it yet, you MUST. Don't rely on the movie to tell you everything. It's going to be too different.
Anyway, it was better earlier, I don't like Drew Lachey.
But it's still a phenomenal show, go see it!

Posted: 12/31/04 at 6:37pmYou can still definitely get the gist of the show with the full OBCR, and it's one of my favorite cast recordings (probably in my top 3) - there may be parts that are a bit confusing, so seeing it live really makes things make sense. (Duh.) But yeah, I would highly recommend it, at the very least to build up your collection of cast recordings.

Well, of course go see it, lol. And, of course, the movie will not tell you everything. See it on stage if you can (but don't neccessarily run to the Nederlander if you're not in the NYC area... the tour is better, as I too strongly dislike Drew Lachey *grumbles*).

Posted: 1/1/05 at 3:06amSorry to disagree with everyone but the OBCR of Rent isn't very good. The entire original cast was disappointed by the recording. It just doesn't have the passion and exuberance that the live show with the OBC was. But good news is that Anthony said the Movie Soundtrack really rocks and definitely will stand above the disappointing OBCR.

Posted: 1/1/05 at 3:11amI don't blame the cast for being disappointed by the recording, and I can understand their reasons for being so. And of course nothing beats seeing the show in person. But I think it's a good thing to have for posterity's sake. (At the very least, own the highlights album - I think those songs stand well on their own, without the interludes, so to speak, which I found to be some of the weaker parts of the OBCR.)

Posted: 1/1/05 at 4:07pmRENT has almost no dialogue, so pretty much the whole show is on the OBCR. you can get a major gist of it by listening to the OBCR.
