I am a teacher's aide for 3rd grade. Out of nowhere one of my student's started singing "Seasons Of Love". They listen to Z100, but I was shocked to hear this come out of the mouth of one of my 3rd graders. So I asked him later on where he had heard that song (thinking it would be from the radio). He replied, "It's from the movie "Rent". I heard it on tv commercials, the radio and my sister's I-pod." I never thought I would see the day where Rent would come out of a student's mouth.

hahaha
we need to start 'em young!
yeah...i am not sure if third grades should be listening to rent. I think that Seasons of Love is great for any age but they should stay away from any of the other songs.
I hope that kid doesn't start singing la vie boheme or something and jump on tables.....
I really hope that kid doesn't get his hands on the OBC cast album and start listening to "Contact"
ooo that would be bad.

well trust me knowing my kids "contact" wouldn't phase them. But sitll I agree. But I seemed to be the only song they knew
Lol Sounds like my brother because he's always singin SOL around the house and hears Rent from my room (ipod speakers) 24/7.
I want to fully introduce my little brothers (9 and 10) to Rent, but I wont until I think that they'll understand it and everything.

Umm...Rent is not exactly age appropriate for 3rd graders? Also, if you bring the Rent cd in, don't leave them alone with it, they'll go tell their parents that they learned STUFF today.

But Seasons of Love is as far as they should listen to.
So many of my students come into voice lessons wanting to sing RENT songs and I always check with their parents first. A lot of schools are using Seasons of Love in their choruses. The middle school in my town is. I am always shocked to hear that some of the younger kids saw the movie though.
Well, it does have a lot of great life lessons. I am happy parents are encouraging this. That is a good thing to check with parents first though. I can just imagine a little 3rd grader coming home from a voice lesson saying "Mommy, I sang about mucho masturbation today!"

Oh please, when were you guys in 3rd grade? I know RENT would have hardly shocked me when I was 8...
I did have a girl come to lessons a few weeks ago asking to learn "Out Tonight" and I couldn't believe her mom agreed. She's only 12 and I don't think I would let my daughter sing it at 12!
lol- actually, I was 13 when I saw RENT for the first time, and learned Out Tonight from my voice teacher as soon as I got home.

I think it's funny how prude people seem to be in this country.
American friends of mine were watching Forrest Gump with their kids and let them watch all the bloody war scenes, but forwarded the sex scene... What's up with that? No Love, but Violence is just fine....lol.
Forrest Gump has a sex scene? Wow, I need to watch that again. I see your point totally though. The number of teen pregnancies has gone down over the past few years, yet teen violence has gone up. I wonder why.

Wow! I thought it was crazy to hear 8 year olds singing "La Vie Boheme" at Anthony Rapp's book signing. haha!

Why is Rent not something you'd want your kids to see? Here are some messages: Love and accept all people, even those different from you, drugs are bad, friends are there for you...
And about Contact, young kids won't understand it anyways, and those who know what it's about...well, they onviously know...lol.

Parents who don't want their children to be exposed to homosexuality wouldn't want their kids to see it. I didn't hear much controversy being stirred up by those conservative "family" groups when the movie came out, surprisingly. I expected them to pounce on it. *shrug*
Well, I personally don't believe in censorship. Still, I'd wait to take children to see Rent until they are old enough to actually appreciate it. Otherwise, I think it would be a waste.
It's just not age appropriate for 8 year olds.

"To leather to dildos," "mucho masturbation," "To faggots, lezzies, dykes. crossdressers too"
Not so appropriate for 8 year olds (no matter what the messages are.)
I agree that age-appropriateness should be a consideration. If parents don't want their kids to learn about the aforementioned "topics" that early in age, then they shouldn't take them to see Rent. I just don't believe in censorship, like censoring books, TV shows that are designated for adults, etc.
Haha not very appropriate. When my cousin was 8 if anyone said hell his reaction would be "Oh my gosh!!! Say it again! Say it again!"
At 8 years old, I doubt they really even understand what most of those words mean. Two year olds think LMNOP is one letter- they're just repeating words and probably not even getting half of them right.
And SOL is not the ONLY appropriate song in Rent. Please. I was watching A Chorus Line and Cabaret when I was their age.
