With my mom being a dance teacher, she always had the Rent cd with her, when I was 7, I had memorized every song, but I couldn't say LVB that fast, but I knew all the lyrics, including Contact, and i'm 12 now, and i'm not messed up.
p.s. My first voice lesson this year, I sang Out Tonight, then again, my voice teacher got fired not long after that, because I go to a Christian school, my principle heard the song, so, that didn't go over to good, but my teacher rocked!!!

Your voice teacher got fired because of you? I hope you've had some sleepless nights over that one, missy.
I think America is a funny country. Americans are such prudes. Big deal if your kid hears a curse word or sees a boob. It's called life, most of them probably here the same out of your mouth all the time. We should give kids more credit, and most of the time the offensive things will go over their heads anyway.
There's certainly material that's not really appropriate for children, but because they won't understand it (a movie like Elephant, for example). But RENT isn't something children must avoid like the plague.

Posted: 2/16/06 at 3:11amI agree with you, vivs678. My sister is 10 and she is listening to all(almost all) the Rent songs. I don't think my mother likes it though when we go around singing "To leather, to dildos, to curry vindaloo...", though.

I didn't hear much controversy being stirred up by those conservative "family" groups when the movie came out, surprisingly. I expected them to pounce on it. *shrug*
Oh, but CAP had a field day.
My favorite part is "irresponsibility with fire."

Oh my! I think this is my favorite part:
Since e-v-e-r-y single non-autonomic movement of the human body is a choice, all sexual practices are a matter of choice. No exceptions. No debate. This is the basis for this report. While I know too little to argue what is called same-sex attractions, having same-sex attractions does not make one "gay." Acting on same-sex attractions does.

Posted: 2/16/06 at 1:09pmMy friend's mom runs a daycare in her home for some kids... they know the words to quite a few of the songs on the movie soundtrack (including parts of Light my Candle and Today 4 U)... it's quite entertaining to watch them sing it... I just hope their parents won't be mad! RENT o course has great mesages in it, but there is the PG-13 side to the movie, and the R side to the play!

Posted: 2/16/06 at 1:17pmThe stage version is definitely NOT R-rated. It doesn't even have a Mature advisory, unlike shows like Avenue Q, Chicago, The Color Purple, Sweeney Todd, and Cabaret.

Well, sometimes adults put the 'malice' in the kids. I mean, when I was younger I sang "Boom, Boom Boom, klet's go back to my room so we can do it all night and you can make me feel right". I didn't know what the heck I was singing about. I thought it was a slumber party. My mom wouls say "I hate that song" but didn't say 'you can't listen to that'. Same goes for TV shows. I watched the Golden Girls and laughed myself silly. At what exactly? Who knows?
Parents should be careful what their kids listen to but overreacting can get them in more trouble as the kids will WANT to find out what the freaking outis about!

Best Rent "warning":
www.screenit.com informed me that, along with all the other things they objected to, "It's possible the film could inspire some kids to break into song and/or dance."
A friend of mine found this statement and sent it to me asking, "Is this a BAD thing?"

Posted: 2/16/06 at 9:51pmMy voice teacher didn't get fired because of me, it's just that he was gay, and my dumb principle didn't think it was setting a good example for our school, that is why I hate my school, and is why i'm changing next year, thank God.
