Rent is Terrible

Oh my god...I thought I would die. Terrible. Why is it sooo famous? Seasons of love is the only good thing about that play. well Angel is a sweetheart.

re: Rent is Terrible

What? Did you just see it for the first time? Maybe if you saw it at some point BEFORE it was five thousand years old you would have understood.

re: Rent is Terrible

Care to elaborate on why you don't like the show. You don't give any kind of critique.

re: Rent is Terrible

OMG. If this doesn't smoke out PrincessMimiChica, she must really be gone for good.

re: Rent is Terrible

RENT is one of the most amazing shows I have ever seen.

its so real on how life can be. You really have to walk into the show with an open heart and mind to love it.... But thats kinda funny you are the first person that i know of to NOT like it.

re: Rent is Terrible

I know a great many who didn't like the show for whatever reason, but at least they gave some kind of critique. This looks like someone is trying to rile up all the Rent-heads.

re: Rent is Terrible

Alright, FindingNamo, I believe I'd like to see this.

Channel away...
I starred in a short film called Magnetic Personality. Check it out!

re: Rent is Terrible

ok, so you do not like mit, obviously you arem dealing with some sort of mental problem, there are many on this board whom would just love to help you! or not! "Rent" is now a classic, a show mwith a real message and real people, and incredible music. The Tour has really slipped, as I have stated before, but the Broadway show is still amazing. If you think the actors are tired and need repalacing, say that, or at least give us some specifics why you disliked it. We all have our opinion on shows, but it helps to back it up with some ideas on why a show does not work for you.......

re: Rent is Terrible

two words can describe why RENT is in VERY real trouble and in desperate need of a closing notice or MAJOR overhaul....

Scary. Spice.

re: Rent is Terrible

That show has been in need of a major overhaul for quite a while now. I can understand how if you've never heard any of the music or seen a quality production, how you would be highly dissapointed with what's on the stage right now.
I do hope that you will pick up the cast recording and give it a listen. It's a really special recording (one of the best ever done in my opinion) that captures the excitement and feelilng of what RENT is really supposed to be.

"Alright, FindingNamo, I believe I'd like to see this."

Okay. But I have to warm up first. Ahem. Me-me-me-meeeeeee. Ethel to Tillie, Ethel to Tillie, come in Tillie, over. Me-me-me-meeeeeee. Mimimimimeeeeeeeee. Namo to PrincessMimi, Namo to PrincessMimi, come in PrincessMimi, over.

"Oh my god. How come all you RENT haters always have to spread the rumor that RENT is closing? It is so ignorant. Every few months somebody starts the rumor and RENT outlives them all. There are alot of really amazing performers in RENT right now, yeah I disagree with some of the random casting choices the producer's make, but it is the strongest it has been in a long time. Why the haters always have to trash it I don't know. Probably because they saw the original cast and have been so close minded ever since but they don't even know. SebasKarMagMatt is amazing and in many cases s/he is better then the original cast member that all of the haters have built shrines to or whatever. In any case all you haters gotta get over yourselfs because RENT will live forever and it is the most real Broadway show ever and really speaks the truth to a generation and if you don't get it maybe you are too old or whatever. Sorry if that is harsh but I am sick of the ignorant and close minded people who trash talk about closing even though they haven't seen the show since the mid-'90s or whatever. Now could we please move on?"

RENT is a great show, but I do agree...it does need to close. I have seen it 3 times and that is enough for me.

re: Rent is Terrible

Why should RENT close before any of the other long running shows? There seems to be a lot of bashing going on. I am curious why so many posters don't like this show. It's better than some of the other stuff running.

Just curious.

re: Rent is Terrible

Go back and see it in 1996.

re: Rent is Terrible

Well, I couldn't stand it either. It took me a lot to even stay through the intermission when I saw it last August. I didn't find any reason to care about the characters, and I know that for me, one of the biggest irritations came at the end when Mimi lived, I didn't like that at all. Aside from the general bit that I just didn't like any of the music aside from One Song Glory (if thats even the correct name.)
And hang on, when did you win the discus?

re: Rent is Terrible

That's it! Namo is REALLY PrincessMimi. I knew it all along.

There is no denying the man has a gift. And what's *scary* is to realize he could probably channel all of us.

re: Rent is Terrible

alright, while it's not my favorite by any means, i adore this show--i think it has wonderful things to say, it has spoken and continues to speak to me on many levels, the music is FUN, i love the sets, costumes, etc. i'm a member of the "young & hip" crowd--i'm not one who is old or doesn't get the show, blah blah. I think it's a fantastic piece of art that DID influence a generation. HOWEVER, i too agree that it's time to close the show or do a major overhaul. I never saw the original cast, so all the rent heads can't play that card here. I've seen various tours since i became familiar with the show in 1998, and I only recently made my first trip to the nederlander to see the show "on broadway!!" I was crazy excited to see it, and was SEVERELY let down. each of the tours (I think I've seen 5 or 6 tour performances) i've seen were leaps & bounds better than the broadway production...and that includes the non-equity tour that was out recently. (i dont have my playbill in hand, so if i'm getting the names wrong, please dont flame too much) I've never seen an entire cast, save one performer, phone in or walk thru a performance--it was bleak. Matt Caplan was barely passable as Mark, Andy Senor was HORRENDOUS as Angel--sure he could hit the notes & sure he could jump on the table & sure he looked fabulous in the costumes, but there was absolutely no emotion to anything he did--did not make me buy his Angel for one second...and i wanted to!!...listen, the boy did not ONCE (believe me, i paid attention), not ONE TIME crack a smile or do anything to make us believe he was having a good time. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt--i left the theater saying that his portrayal of Angel was either wildly brilliant or the worst performance i've ever seen in any show ever. i dotn recall the names of the rest of the performers (none were memorable) other than Krystal Washington, who was Mimi. She was working her ass off & was doing a great job, IMO. I had seen her on the non-eq tour and was blown away. there was no energy to the show, obvious line & lyric flubs all over the place, choreography was not tight...i left wishing that i could get those 2.5 hours of my life back, and thinking that i was REALLY glad i had used a discount coupon. i wouln't have recommeded the broadway production to anyone...AND THIS COMING FROM SOMEONE WHO LOVES THE SHOW!! perhaps if a person has never seen the show before, what is currently being performed at the nederlander is great, but otherwise, IMO, it's completely unacceptable.

sort of sorry for the long & somewhat rambling post, but someone was asking for a more detailed reason on why Rent should close in New York. Hope this helps. :)

re: Rent is Terrible

For those who've seen it recently... I was thinking of going again. I haven't seen it in 6 years and my boyfriend has never seen it (gasp)

But is the current cast worn out? Is their an overhaul planned? Should I wait? etc... I wish more magazines would do reviews of older shows as well as the 'just opened' variety.

re: Rent is Terrible

It is in terrible shape right now. I don't know if theres a overhaul planned. but right now..it is not worth the price of admission.
