Rent is Terrible — Page 4

i couldnt disagree more with the title of this thread, "rent" isnt terrible IMO- its brilliant. but if the current production is no good, id rather it closed (just after i get a chance to see it again)

i didnt say that id like it to close if "a few actors arent up to par", i said id like it to close if the entire production is "no good". i havnt seen it in a while, hence the use of the word "IT", but IF i were to see it, and feel that it no longer lives up to the brilliance of the original production, then IN MY OPINION, id rather it close than damage the shows legacy. thats all.

Odds are theyre going to milk the show until no more money can possibly be made of it, or until the attendence drops too low to be able to boost with some random "star" (and I use that term loosely) being tossed in to try and bring in people who otherwise would not see it. Plus if they use someone who has a strong young person fan base they're going to get even more people because of the whole thing where the parent has to take the kid so two tickets get sold instead of one.

Bang isn't always done as a duet, it can be done as a trio as well. And, if you'll notice I said it "felt to me" which is true. It did feel to me that all he did was take the exact same concept and make it more (unnecessarily) blatant. Through the entire song all I kept thinking was "this is a more explicit version of bang, all he did was morph the song to this point" and that's very distracting. I have a friend who hated Wicked because every song reminded her of "Spark of Creation" sometimes it just happens. I don't know what he was thinking when he wrote Contact, I just know that's the first thing that came into my head.

'Rent' will keep running as long as it is profitable. That's how show BUSINESS works. Pining for a show to close over artistic reasons is really rather silly.

Show makes money = open; show doesn't make money = close.

That's the entire equation.

No one's trying to approve your 'feeling,' people are trying, in a conversational context, to understand why you made a connection between two seemingly unconnected works. Why? Because you brought them up and they *seem* like an odd connection to make. This then creates curiosity as to why you might have made said connection. You're inability to point out the connection ends up making the entire attempt seem rather futile and pointless, sure, but it only begs the question of why bring it up in the first place.

Anyone who likes Rent and says they identify with it is fine. Me, personally, I felt it was just giving a false sense of reality. Yes, celebrate life, I understand that and I see the whole point to it, more power to them. I just don't see how having Mimi live at the end was at all appropriate to that theme.
I don't think that connection was an odd connection to make. What year was Bang written? Certainly before Contact was. (They do use it as duet on the Marry Me a Little soundtrack as it was meant to be but in Putting it Together they did it as a Trio, I've never heard it done as a solo.) I watched the show, which I first was bothered by the fact that it was an interpretation or whatever you call it of La Boheme. Then I heard Contact and I felt it was just a more vulgar and expanded (in number of singers) feeling to Bang. The style of it was much like that song and the music of it reminded me of Sondheim style. I brought it up because it was one of the things that bothered me. I also was bothered by the scene where one of them (I don't know which one because I never bothered to remember the names) gets thrown out of the Church. Actually, that was the scene that bothered me the most. I'm sure there are people out there who feel that way, but having never experienced it there is nothing there for me to relate to. At all. In the entire show.
I'll stick to La Boheme.

I thought Joey did a decent job when I saw him, but I was more amazed by the incrediable actor who was playing Angel. Honestly unbelievable and I'm so happy for him!!! I hear he's done a few things since then; a little off-Broadway show called Zanna Don't and some tv show on Bravo. hehehehehehehehe
Who knew Jai would become the celebrity he is today? All I can say is, I saw him when (and she looked good!!!)
