Yes, my opinion of course. Totally subjective. But as a generalization, PHANTOM got horrible reviews and audience response was tepid. Surely, you wouldn't want the same for a film of RENT?

It's not worth either of our time to argue this again - I'm still reserved, but just... not so much. Maybe it's just because I've finally reached a point where I want it to be good, I don't know.

I want it to be good too, but I'm trying not to get so excited that I can actually hear my heart cracking if it disappoints.

Yahoo Movies still has it listed for 11/11 - I can't imagine they'd change it to 11/25, a scant one week after Harry Potter opens. Plus, that's Thanksgiving weekend, movies would open on 11/23 to get the holiday crowds (well, those avoiding the malls, anyway)

I would think that it would be better for Rent to avoid the Harry Potter opening weekend altogether, because lets face it... anything that opened against it would be crushed. If Rent opened on the 11th, it would see a huge second weekend drop-off due to Potter. But, if Rent opened a week after Potter, it could benefit from Potter's 2nd weekend drop-off that has become the trend. Although, I could see it being great counter-programming to Potter.

re: Rent movie now opening on November 25th?

Phantom got bad reviews because of the casting, IMO. RENT is using the original Broadway cast (for the most part) so things should be okay... though, personally I think there has to be a middle ground somewhere between using crappy Hollywood people and the actual original Broadway cast...

Anyway, does anyone know if this will be played in theaters nationwide, or just at select ones?

There will be some critics who will take issue with the Original Cast repeating their roles for the film. There will be some that say they are too old now and that damages the story.

Fair warning.

I'm not sure if this can strictly be a matter of opinion. Didn't a number of reviews also cite the Webber's lyrics and the direction? To rottentomatoes.com I go...

That is true; a lot of them didn't like the Phantom musical in general. I didn't want to say that, because I'm one of them. *runs from Phans*

Anyway... you're right, there were a lot more problems than casting. But casting was a big issue; I don't think many people liked Gerard.

I noticed a lot of critics who didn't like the Phantom movie also didn't like the stage show.

And yea... I'm gonna be half-tempted to punch some of these critics when they say the cast is too old... I mean, come on they do NOT look old.

But they ARE old. That's the thing. They may look sixteen, but we all know that they did these roles ten years ago, which gives a critic fair reign to say "So and so is too old for the role" simply because they can assume they were cast age appropriate a decade ago.

Some stills leave me convinced that age won't be an issue. Others (like Jesse L. Martin dancing on a table and wrinkled Wilson by the bicycle) leave me trying too hard to convince myself of that.

Michael: I completely agree. Hence why I said that there HAS to be a middle ground somewhere between using crappy underaged Hollywood people and the actual original Broadway cast.

I think the last critically-acclaimed movie musical has been Chicago. The last one that I personally thought was good was Evita (I liked Chicago until I saw it onstage, then my outlook was changed)

Rather than wanting to punch the critics, I'm just not going to read the reviews. They'll probably break my heart, one way or another.

Emcee, neither of us will be able to resist reading those reviews.

TheActr97J, Wilson definitely appears to have been smoking for more than a few years in that one still but he looks much more attractive wearing the blonde wig in the New Years still.

re: Rent movie now opening on November 25th?

I never read film reviews, so ignoring them will be a matter of course. I'll be afraid, though. My reading them probably won't result in anything pretty - backhanded insults to Adam's acting are bound to be there.
