Ute Lemper and Ruthie Henshall were much better, in my huble opinion, as Roxie and Velma in CHICAGO when they came to Broadway. Henry Goodman was better as Billy Flynn than James Naughton was.
Richard Kind and Roger Bart were great as LEO and MAX in THE PRODUCERS. As was Lewis J Stadlen.

Pearl Bailey wasn't BETTER than Carol Channing in HELLO, DOLLY! (no one could ever be!) but she created her own version of the role and as a result, it was virtually a brand-new show.

I've always felt that Scarlett Strallen and Laura Michelle Kelly have given stronger and far more superior performances in the role of Mary than Ashley Brown did in Mary Poppins Miss Strallen to every last detail was absolutely brilliant in the role. I Love Ashley Brown but i've always have felt that she was miscast in the role but others will probably disagree

George Hearn was much better as Sweeney Todd than Len Cariou.
Len was fine but George Hearn scared the bejesus out of me.
Ironically, I went back to see it because Dorothy Loudon took over for Angela.
Dorothy (who is normally wonderful) camped up the role to much and was just this side of awful
George Hearn was amazing
I hate Matthew Broderick as a performer and I saw Roger Bart twice in The Producers, so to me he is Leo Bloom.

For me, it was just the opposite. Cariou's Sweeney remains the greatest performance I've seen in a musical. I haven't seen anyone else in the role who even came close to his combination of vulnerability, sensuality, rage, grief, and terror.
Recently, Marin Mazzie and company coming in for Alice Ripley and company in Next to Normal. Both casts superb. Extremely different and successful interpretation, showing this great musical should have a long life.
