Thanks MB...I am trying to get tickets for late Aug, so I am just trying to get a feel of what is going on. At this same stage with Lennon is SF, I decided to save the trip from SoCal to NoCal, so your imput is helping my decision.
As I was checking hotel reservations, I asked the clerk if he could find me a hotel near the Curran Theater for the show, and he told me he had seen the show Sunday. He loved it, although he remembers the earlier version more fondly, and thought it was worth the road trip. He mentioned there was alot of excitement in the lobby before the show, none like he had seen in SF before.
I think if you have an affinity for ACL, it will definitely be worth the road trip from So.CA. I'm not sure that the production will change much between SF and NYC, but by late August I'm sure the cast will be settled and it will be pretty clear how the show is going to fare going into New York.
The people who seem to be liking the production most are actually people who saw it the first time around. There have been lots of "comparison reports" to the different casts of the first production and the new cast seems to be faring pretty well with memory lane

There are now a few more reports on ATC. I'm going to copy and paste one because I think its particularly detailed:
