re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

I think Bennett and Fosse respected each other; they of course had a rivalry in 1975, but Fosse certainly recognized the genius of ACL and said once in an interview that he would have directed the film version, but he wasn't asked...

I have heard a recording of Ann Reinking as Cassie and she's pretty great. She was never as powerful as singer as Donna McKechnie but she was always a very good actress and she really sold the dialogue and the song. She was, of course, like McKechnie, a dancer at the time who had stardom dangled in front of her, never to "quite" achieve it. Surely that fueled her performance.

MB... I have often thought that a revisiting of the line, updating, as you will, of the stories would be quite interesting.

b12b... as I've told you before, I totally agree with you that the only way to make this work is to have actors really 'connect' with the characters. The last production I was in, the director worked very hard at making us connect with our characters. We created our own backstories, had entire rehearsals where we would sit and talk to each other as our characters. We knew who knew each other, who liked whom... the Sheila/Val conflict had background. The choreo sucked... but everyone who saw the show said that they had seen a quality in the show they had not seen in other recent productions in our area.

If we, a small, non-professional group could grasp that concept, I imagine it should come easy for professional, Broadway caliber performers.

yeah, that "connection" is vital. And I would humbly submit that for most in the audience, they are not there to see how Broadway gypsies behaved in 1975; that is for the show-biz-backstory crowd (who also happen to frequent this board). They are there to see great singing, dancing, and acting. To connect to the passion of dancers no matter what their profession, or of what time period. DAYDREAMER has a related story in the "ACL OCR" thread on the OT board. Check that thread out if you haven't already.

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

Fosse and Bennett did respect one another's work and they are a wonderful contrast to one another as well.

Annie was the first Cassie replacement when the majority of the company moved to LA. She is also the first dancer to tie the skirt on the left side and every other Cassie followed suit. While Donna had fab turns, Annie had legs and kicks for days so, by tying the skirt on the other side it really accentuates the leg more and showed of the choreography a lot better.

Now, both Donna and Cassie were before my time, however, I did see Donna when she went back into the show in the 80's. I've said it a million times before but Vicki Frederick was my first Cassie and she was amazing. Not only drop dead gorgeous but she sang and dances the hell outta that part not to mention her impeccable acting. Her "Music And The Mirror" was so intense. I don't think anyone in the theatre drew breathe during it. It stopped the show. The dialogue had to be held while applause roared throughout The Shubert. Also, I will never forget her "Red Light" section of "TMATM" was effing h-o-t!!! There are some pictures out there, especially in the book "The Longest Line" that give you a glimpse of how amazing her performance was.

Fosse did want to direct the ACL movie but was never asked. His response was the opening audition sequence of ALL THAT JAZZ, which really captures the essence of ACL and I would have loved to have seen what he could have done with the ACL film.

Some of you may be aware but there was a ACL "workshop" done back in the late 90's that simply updated the text pop icon references and the dates that the cast was born in and it worked. Sure, you still had the 70's flared music but the script really hit home a lot more.

The references in the script remind me of THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER where names are dropped left and right and unless you know a great deal about 1930's historical, entertainment and social references a great deal of it does not make sense. As a matter of fact when I did it a few years back, an insert was put in the program listing alphabetically the references in the show with a brief bio. I mean tell me one 18 year old who knows who Steve McQueen is.

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

I saw the production on Sunday night. It had some technical flaws and opening jitters but overall it was beautiful.
I love going to first previews for the humanity of it. I love it when an actor's costume gets caught on scenery or something goes flying into the audience. I don't love it when someones voice cracks but unhappily, it happens. I'm coming to New York in October so we'll see how the show developes. I'm sure it will be awesome.

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

"'A Chorus Line' should never be expected to thrive on its “periodness,” it should thrive on its humanity."

Thanks best12bars, I think that pretty much sums it up.

A Chorus Line is not an amazing piece because of its flash. Its amazing because it has humanity, heart and connection to real people - the very thing that is missing (once again my opinion) from the shows we're seeing on Broadway today, as well as most of the movies coming out of Hollywood. They've got the flash, effects and polish down pat. What they're missing is the humanity.

And if for no other reason this is why we need A Chorus Line on Broadway again, even if it's only a museum piece - to remind us what Broadway theatre can be when artists reach high enough.

Some photographs from the SF run.

I will be a bitch and say those high kicks are sloppy. I do like the picture of D'Amboise though. Interesting that in the press video, she wore her skirt on the right like McKechnie but for performance she has gone the Ann Reinking route with the skirt on the left.

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

Bitch.

EDIT: I'll be even bitchier... Why does Paul look Asian?

EDIT2: Someone was nice enough to point out to me that he is Hawaiian. So I guess that would be why!

*ponders*

Well, Paul San Marco has the line where he says he doesn't "look Puerto Rican..." I guess I would agree with that after seeing the photos.

I suppose Paul doesn't have to look WHITE though. Just "Not Puerto Rican," as he says.

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

Now, I wonder why Bobby has to wear that stupid scarf (because Bob Avian says the original costumes are "iconic") and Paul doesn't have to have a moustache. I guess it doesn't matter that the gay guys in the mid-'70s with the zip up sweatershirts all had the moustaches, which were actual icons of the time (as opposed to icons of A Chorus Line).

I miss Val's "Cindy Brady" pigtails.

Aside from being "sassy" you could always spot her in the crowd of dancers because of those pigtails.

EDIT: Either Xerox the original show or don't.

Um, no.

What about having Deidre and Charlotte alternate in the roles of Sheila and Cassie?

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

Karen Ziemba covered Cassie in the original run. If D'Amboise is too old, Ziemba is definitely way too old.

The character really is supposed to be 32. She's not been gone from New York for a decade; she's been in Los Angeles for 2 years trying to be a starlett and being the rather "wild" girlfriend of a high powered Hollywood agent. It's a little unrealistic for a chorus girl in her 40s to be out in CA living that life.

If they wanted a Cassie that is "really" living the life of the character; I'd say Natscia Diaz (the rumoured "other" choice) is actually closer. Diaz had early success in New York in the chours, graduated to roles, developed a reputation for being wild and difficult and was fired from more than one musical. It wouldn't be hard to imagine her reluctantly returning to the chorus because she needed a job.

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

ijay889 - I did get to see Ann Reinking as Cassie and I thought she was great. She made the role her own. Ms. Mckechnie sang it better but Reinking's dancing knocked me out. No one dances like this woman - She's so unique. It could be the Fosse influence. She was able to combine Bennett's brilliant choreography with her own innate Fosse style. Both ladies had Cassie's requisite vulnerability. I loved them both. I wish Ms. D'Amboise luck - Tough acts to follow.

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

Also remember that Bennett adjusted the Music and the Mirror choreography for Reinking to take advantage of her long line and ballet training. Just as he built the original choreography on McKechnie's body to accentuate her amazing rapid fire spins and footwork, his version for Reinking had more high kicks and leaps to show off her stunning legs.

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

From what I am reading, I'm really starting to get excited about Heather Parcells (Judy). The tiny, TINY clip of her singing on that news report thingy sounded good. I moved away from the SF area recently (grr) so I hope I am able to see it eventually.

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

Love that review!!! So glad things are much better and everyone is getting into their parts. Can't wait to see this on Broadway(I'll be seeing it Oct. 12).
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

Hmm. Interesting they've now lowered keys for d'Amboise. I wonder if it is the Reinking keys.

I think Charlotte is a fine singer, she is more than just a "carry a tune singer." But lets face it, she doesn't really have a belt like McKechnie. Nor the range.
#147

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

Reinking literally sang the songs in a tenor key. I doubt D'Amboise is doing them quite that low! But lowering the song to better suit her voice could make a huge difference in her performance and in her confidence in the role.

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

Oh, I didn't know Reinking's were lowered that much. In the 70's she had quite a nice range and vocal quality.. (Goodtime Charley, etc.) I assume she sang Cassie in Roxie/Charity type keys.

Anyway I agree, lowering keys slightly for Charlotte can greatly improve her confidence and overall performance.

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

Is there a summary of the reviews from the previews? Or are they mixed in this thread?

Direction please!

re: Reports on A CHORUS LINE in SF

They are all mixed in. Basically, reports from the early previews were very mixed, with many feeling that the cast didn't seem "hungry" enough in their roles, Deidre Goodwin was stealing the show as Sheila, but D'Amboise was disappointing as Cassie.

There have been some more recent reviews in the past couple of days that are a bit more positive. We know the key has been changed for D'Amboise's song and that seems to be helping.
