Andy Karl was OK but Richard was the best!

As for James, he was signed to play Link Larkin but left to do a film and Matthew Morrison got that part because he was the understudy. I read somewhere that Matthew got the u/s role because Richard had turned it down at the time since he just finished a gig as James' understudy. Anyway, James C. is on Tori Spelling's show these days. I think he got the SNF gig because of his looks but he was nowhere near the dancer/singer that Richard is.

Jimsf, you and I agree on most topics but I have to say, Karl was certainly more than "ok" as Manero. He was fantastic. Not to take anything away from Blake as I can tell you're a huge, huge fan, but there's no denying Karl gave every other Manero a run for his money. As for Carpinello, can you say "bad career move"

He looked completely out of place as Link Larkin. He was supposed to be playing a teenager, when in reality, he looked like he was in his mid thirties.

Not at all, he looks like he is in his mid 20's nowadays.

I disagree. I guess you have never seen John Travolta, Stockard Channing, Olivia Newton John play teenagers in "Grease" or Connie Stevens, Robert Conrad or Stephanie Powers in "Palm Springs Weekend" or the Beach Party gang? All of those actors were far beyond their teenage years!

Unfortunately, I was referring to Mr. Blake in Hairspray. I am aware that people in their twenties and thirties play kids half their age.

And everytime I would watch Richard as Link, I kept thinking he was going to run off with Velma, not Tracy.

I've said here before that Austin Miller was my favorite Link followed by Richard. I have seen them all (NYC and tour). I never thought of him as being too old since his talent is what matters and he has plenty of that!
