Ridiculous Motown question

I've been trying to look this up all over the internet, to no avail, so maybe someone remembers.

Towards the end of the first act of Motown, there's some sort of gunfire or explosion set off. Does anyone remember what it is and how it plays into the plot?

I believe this is when Dr. King was shot.
