Posted: 6/29/06 at 3:48pmEverything Riedel says is true. I know for a fact that he makes sure to get all of his ducks in a row before they print the story.

But if his claim to fame is "inside sources", wouldn't his consistently getting stuff like this wrong suggest that he is exagerrating the extent of his access, to a maliciously deceptive degree?
And wouldn't my inability to spell "exagerrate" indicate I'd be better off reading the dictionary than posting on message boards?
#28re: Riedel Prediction
Posted: 6/29/06 at 4:08pmHe does have inside sources, but he never claimed that anyone told him that THE WEDDING SINGER would close. It was HIS independant prediction.

But if he knows what he's talking about, what could possess him to make such a stupid prediction? There was nothing about its grosses to suggest that it would be closing by the end of the month. Unless he had inside info that the advance past the end of the month was virtually nonexistant. In which case he should no longer trust his source.

He. Never. Said. That. He. Was. Told. That. The. Wedding. Singer. Would. Close.
IT.
WAS.
A.
PREDICTION.
And a half prediction to that. It was just his way of saying, once again, that he thinks THE WEDDING SINGER is garbage. And, the grosses for THE WEDDING SINGER were not good before they got their little boost from non-stop TV and radio ads, and their performance on the Tony's.

Posted: 6/29/06 at 4:30pmEven Riedel has said his predictions are awful. When his "post-Tonys column" came out, his last line was something to the effect of: "and the people who got the most wrong were Elisa Winter of USA Today and I. See you on the unemployment line, Elisa!"

So he was wrong about this and he is wrong about "Hairspray". Why keep defending him? Are you Mr. Riedel in disguise?
Speaking of Mr. R, there was a good movie that came and went a few months back called "Game Six". It took place on the day of the sixth game of the 1986 World Series between the Mets and the Red Sox but it was a movie about theatre. There was a much hated Riedel like critic played by Robert Downey, Jr.

Of course it's a prediction. Any time you declare something will happen in the future, it's a prediction. But it was an incorrect prediction, and far from his first.
I just think it's sad that a guy who serves as a source of information for many casual Broadway fans, who could be sort of a classy ambassador for the industry as a whole, is so mean and wrong all the time.

How can he be wrong about HAIRSPRAY when no one knows for sure yet? He said that HAIRSPRAY may close - not that HAIRSPRAY will close.
And even if HAIRSPRAY was looking at closing or moving - it wouldn't be announced to the general public this early.
Some people have absolutely no concept of "truth" and "Predictions."

Posted: 6/29/06 at 4:44pmMean and wrong all the time? Michael Reidel is a very reliable source of information. He is a gossip columnist though and what he gossips about isn't always true. The man is intelligent and has his finger on the pulse of Broadway. He is no fool and makes his money gossiping. Destroying careers isn't what he's paid for, he's paid to gossip and if that gossip is detrimental, well he's still doing his job.

FYI: everyone listen to Sumofallthings. Riedel is a GOSSIP COLUMNIST. It's his job to print the GOSSIP. He is NOT a critic and he does not broadcast any reviews.
Don't forget what paper he's working for....

When I was a teenager, there were two very popular gossip magazines. One, the "National Enquirer", got things right about 60% of the time, and seemed to be a place where people went if they had a (true) story to tell that was too hot for the mainstream press to handle. The other, the "Weekly World News", was right 0% of the time, but had stories that were so entertaining (Bat Boy! Clinton Meets Aliens!) that it was a must-read.
I think Michael's trying to be both at the same time, and that don't work.
When he effortlessly segues from a personal slam at, say, Wedding Singer, into "news" about Wedding Singer that also happens to be bad, doesn't that make you suspect that he has an agenda that colors his "reporting"? That maybe Margo Lion didn't comp his cousin's Hairspray tickets?
Face it: Cindy Adams gets better Broadway scoops than Riedel, and she's 109 years old.
