From today's NY Post:
"The Wedding Singer" will close by the end of the month, and all will be right with the world.
This makes me sad
. It's really not a bad show, just not as good as some of the others this season.
I hope it doesn't close.
Some of us have been talking about this
OVER HERE
Thats dumb.. Wedding Singer is a fun show and should NOT close.. summer will bring lots of new biz.

Reidel is a tool.
Why is he a tool? Because he speaks the truth and people don't want to hear the truth?
It's not closing anytime soon, it was packed last night and the audience had a great time!
He's a pompous ass! Then again, I'd never miss his column. I just find his 'glee' distasteful. There's nothing wrong with Wedding Singer, if all you want is an upbeat, good time. Not every show has to change the landscape of the American Musical Theatre on Broadway. I see no difference whatsoever between this show, or Jersey Boys. No emotional whallop at all, just a plain, good time (Big River, Drood, Crazy for You).

It's not so much what he says, but how he says it that makes me roll my eyes every time, hence the "tool" thing. I just am not a fan.
Well he's certainly flipped side on the DC over JB camps. On his Theatre Talk show, taped weeks ago...he went for JB because of community Buzz...and today he says pretty much the same, but for DC!
I hope he's right now because DC winning would be electrifying at Radio City!
Munk-
He does not always speak the truth. He spins gossip and tries to make it a way to hurt an actor or actressess career.
Not something I find admirable.
Examples:
1. Bernadette Peters
2. John L. Young
Last night he admitted (in his way) that he was wrong about John.
Thankfully, Elice kicked his ass verbally.
I also have to say how much I adore Seth. He LOVES THEATER.
LOVES IT. And he does not look for spin in order to make a career.
Musto is the same way. Riedel needs to change! You can tell that THEATER is NOT his passion.
In addition, he also wont ever shut up about the Avenue Q Pizza party. GIVE IT A F*CKIN BREAK ALREADY. It MAKES ME SO MAD. And the best part was that DAVID STONE Stood up and protected Kevin McKollum. That was so interesting. David Stone is COOL.

Corine2,
Just want to let you know how much I enjoy reading your Posts. Very professional, informative and you appear to be someone who can speak with direct knowledge regarding the theatre. Thanks a lot!
I wasn't talking about the petty gossip things that he's right on - I was talking about closing and opening speculation, Tony speculation, etc. - that he's usually correct about.
Thank you, Holly.
For some of us THEATER IS A DEEP PASSION. We care about the actors we interview. We LOVE THEATER. We don't want to DESTROY Broadway and have names like THE BUTCHER OF BROADWAY.
Wayman Wong. Susan Haskins. Musto are all people that LIVE for Theater.
Riedel has a lot of power and when you talk to him he is actually a nice guy. I wish he would use his intelligence for GOOD.
Corine
Seth R is the most passionate person in this business. I wish they would have let him speak more at the event last night.
I LOVE HIS PASSION. We share it! LOVE FOR THEATER.
Passion is what it is all about. That is what is different between us. What really kills me, is he is the most powerful "Journalist" covering Broadway. That makes me sad.
Others that show PASSION:
Roma Torre
Donna Karger.
PASSION IS WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT. Promoting Broadway. Helping it, not killing it. Why does he have so much power? It is very upsetting.

Riedel is such a twat.
Riedel is not correct about "Wedding Singer"
Even someone without his vast "insider" sources, some "civilian", can just look at the numbers on this very website, factor in the time of year, the estimated budget, etc., and extrapolate that even under the most dire scenarios, WS will last til September.
Riedel is entitled to his opinion. But he often confuses what he thinks will happen with what he wishes would happen. And arrogantly presents the result as a "scoop".
And he's a twat.
Yes, look at the numbers:
The 400s is not enough to sustain a Bway musical these days and the numbers are down from last week.
I wish no harm, but these are the facts kids.
I'm reposting this message in this more appropriate thread:
"Michael Riedel in Friday's NY Post says in his predictions that..."
That's an odd note in what is otherwise a Tony prediction column. I guess he's still pissed from being so off in his Tony nomination column:
"A weak field of leading actresses was made even weaker, which probably means Roberts will make the cut, joining... Frances Sternhagen ("Seascape")."
"Stephen Campbell Moore, who plays Griffiths' adversary [in History Boys], will also get a nod."
"Of the boys, expect nominations for Dominic Cooper ("the sexy one," as the nominators call him) and and either Jamie Parker ("the really cute piano player") or Russell Tovey ("the dumb one")."
"The only reason the entire slate of supporting actors in a play won't be made up of History Boys is that the nominators will save a spot for Ian McDiarmid, of "Faith Healer."
"...performers who can expect nominations Tuesday include Anthony Sher ("Primo"), Edward Hibbert ("The Drowsy Chaperone"), and Brian F. O'Byrne ("Shining City")."
So he's guessing, and not much better than anyone else, even with him "chatting up nominators to see where they stand."

The Wedding Singer's percentages have been all over the place. They were up two weeks ago from the week before that and then they went down a little. I think after the appearances on television this week, the show will get a much needed boost. I think it will last through summer. It's a good summer crowd pleaser and Stephen Lynch is recognizable to a lot of the twentysomething crowd.
I agree that Riedel is a jerk, but Munk's right - he's normally right.
Hopefully the Tonys will give the show a boost though - I don't think it's too late for it.
His record when it comes to the Tonys is not so great. I can still remember how last year he was saying up till fairly late that Applegate would win actress in a musical when it was long since obvious to everyone else that Clark was a shoo-in.

I for one am totally SICK of Riedel, who does he think he is . . a critic ? He has too
much stupid a-- power, or so he thinks. Last I heard he was a gossip guy ! !
Why doesn't he get a life ! Leave us all to our own opinions, we do have our own
minds. Now that I have vented I feel better, but I still DON'T LIKE HIM !
Well, here we are, at the end of the month.
If anybody's walking down 45th Street tomorrow, please stop and read Wedding Singer's closing notice, and post the date of the last show.
Cause love him or loathe him, Riedel always tells the truth, right?
He tells the truth about things that do, in fact - contain truth.
It was merely a prediction - nothing more and nothing less.
