Word on Young Frank:
After getting no laughs at the dress rehearsal, they were overjoyed to have an audience full of fans at the first preview. Brooks and Meehan are happy with the state of the show but admit it's only at 75%. Shuler and Megan are the audience favorites.
Xanadu:
A tour is in the works, as well as a London production. Million-dollar advance.
Grease:
A guessing game about how bad the reviews will be. He refers to Max and Laura as "the nobodies." Did he steal my word?

Posted: 8/10/07 at 1:32amI hope the reviews focus less on Max & Laura and more on the production. They're by no means phenomenal, but they're not the problem with the show.

"I can't imagine Xanadu playing in a 3,000 concert hall."
That's what I thought when I saw the show. They would have to find smaller, intimate venues to put this show on. The intimate staging was one of the best parts of this show for me. I really felt like I was seeing something special. I think this would be lost in a typical 3000 seat theater.

Posted: 8/10/07 at 1:37amSeeing Xanadu at the end of September. I frankly do not know much about the show, but I guess I will see how it will do on a tour! I can't wait. Sounds like a great, uplifting show.

XANADU seems like such a New York-targeted show, I can't imagine it doing well on tour, particularly without the amazing Mary Testa and Jackie Hoffman as well as Cheyenne Jackson and Kerry Butler--all four got across-the-board raves. The show is a camp hit, leave it to producers to try to milk it for all they can, I just really hope it doesn't backfire.
GREASE...well...I don't care how the reviews go, we all know its critic-proof, unfortunately.
And YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN needs to be less of a SPAMALOT more of a good show!

Just wanted to say congrats to XANADU- for such a small show, thats a pretty good advance for right now :)
And I hope YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN improves by the time it gets to New York- I'm sure it will, though, there's a great team behind it.

I'm sure Brantley will spread his hate evenly.
I don't know about Brantley. He's often a big pusher of pop culture garbage, and a lot of his reviews are directed toward the "non-theatre" readers who don't actually read theatre reviews. He might be kind of supportive of the show.
Isherwood would trash it appropriately though.

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."

Posted: 8/10/07 at 11:20amThe thing is, if Grease gets no good reviews, what are they going to do for quotes? Ask people that have... oh wait, I answered my own question.

Posted: 8/10/07 at 2:41pmBut I still think Brantley has good taste. I mean, if it was a good show, he would say so regardless of the fact that it was casted from a reality TV show, but reading the reviews posted on here, I can't imagine it getting a rave from him. It might turn into his "Legally Blonde" review, where basicallly he threw the towel in and said "it doesn't matter what i say."

Posted: 8/10/07 at 10:41pmHow well does Spelling Bee play in some of the massive tour houses? I saw that on Broadway and can't imagine how it would do in such a big space, the space it's got right now seems perfect for that show. If Spelling Bee can tour, why not Xanadu?

Posted: 8/10/07 at 11:28pmShe'd be a really old, anyway, and unless the role required a knowledge of adult development and aging and the psychology of religion, I don't think she'd be very good at it. Unless she has an MT background of which I am unaware. I'm just laughing at the coincidence.
