This could be really interesting as long as there's a good show. Wish it was based more on the books or the animated Disney film, not that awful live action version. The visuals could be stunning, but who knows. This could be the next Beauty and the Beast or the next Tarzan.
I wish Disney did musicals based on the older films. Maybe a Sleeping Beauty or Jungle Book musical? Or just finally bring over freaking Hunchback?

The Jungle Book is premiering next year at Chicago Goodman with Mary Zimmerman directing. It'll be interesting how it turns out but I think it's for licensing rather than Broadway.

It's a visually stunning film and that would be amazing to translate on stage with the costumes and puppets and make up replacing the CG characters. The shrinking and growing is a challenge but I'm sure it can be done.

No one repeat no one has ever made a successful stage production or movie of Alice in Wonderland. She falls down a hole and meets this person and that person and this person and then she comes out of the hole. It's just not compelling or interesting story telling. The art direction (costumes/ make up) of the Burton Movie was great but made for awful story telling as did all of the incarnations.
If Elizabeth Swados couldn't do it, If Frank Wildhorn couldn't do it, If Charles Strouse with Sammy Davis pn board couldn't do it in an animated cartoon,, if Eve La galiene couldn't do it,.. why would they think this would work?
And Rob Ashford? I like his work but I don't think he could pull this off.
This is one lousy idea.

People don't want a show anymore, they want a thrill ride or something terribly familiar no matter how pedestrian it is. This isn't a show....it's Space Mountain with characters.

I hope it isn't done with all puppets. That's one of the reasons I disliked The Lion King--for me, it's hard to connect with puppets. Avenue Q managed it, but they were much simpler designs.

You're absolutely right. Nobody sees anything else. Ever. And never before ever wanted such a thing.

Posted: 3/18/12 at 1:22pmIf they are going to adapt Alice in Wonderland to the stage, they should do the animated version. MTI has a version, and it's actually pretty good.

Posted: 3/18/12 at 3:17pmI wish this was more like Space Mountain with characters. The Imagineers put more creativity into every ride concept than half of these shows get. (Oh dear, I just had a birthday and already sound like a grump).

Posted: 3/18/12 at 3:31pmThey need to bring Nightmare Before Christmas to the stage. It'd be hard, but if Burton was heavily involved, it would be awesome.

How would you...? Why would you...?
I can't even complete my thoughts about this. I am all for a really good Alice in Wonderland show but...Tim Burton's isn't going to be it. And definitely not so close to Wonderland coming and going.

Posted: 3/19/12 at 2:24pmI still will never understand how Linda Woolverton continues to get work. She butchered the Vampire Chronicles for Lestat, and she butchered Lewis Carroll's books in the Alice screenplay. Literally everything she adapts is a train wreck. Leave Alice be, after Tim Burton's movie and Wildhorn's pitiful excuse for a musical, that material needs some time to breath again. Why won't directors/writers of stage productions of Alice won't just go back to the source material and adapt a more faithful version? There's nothing wrong with the source material as it is.

I wish they would stop taking movies and making them musicals, as much as I have enjoyed some of them. I wish there was more originality. The irony of this is my school has a children's production of Alice playing here. Ours is probably better than this will be.
But if they put Tangled onstage, yes I would so be there.
