Just got back in town from seeing the show. Really had a lot of fun at the show. I have seen the show in Chicago (Pre-Broadway), Broadway and both Tours so there was no way I was going to miss the regional premiere when it was just a three hour drive away.
Let’s start with the cast- Rob McClure made a great Gomez. He had a lot of fun in the role and was in fine form. I will admit that his voice was not as strong as Douglas Sills was on Tour, He cut the end note of Not Today short. Jenny Powers was great too as Morticia. However I felt that she was much too alive for Morticia. Morticia is supposed to be very stiff, reserved and Jenny moved her body around too much and was too animated (its hard to explain, but if you saw it you would get what I mean.). Another big thing for me were her costumes- They were not that tight and as form fitting as they could have been. Not only that, but her dresses only went down to about her shin. In all incarnations of the character, her dress goes down over her feet. They kept the line where Gomez says that he was surprised to find out she had legs, even though it was obvious throughout the show. Also she did the Morticia hop/walk, but it just looked stupid because there was no call for it because of the dress. They also kept the line from Gomez about her dress being cut down to Venezuela- even though her cleavage was barely visible.
Jen Cody was wonderful as Grandma, and though young, she completely worked in the role and was hysterical- In the makeup, she passed for much older. Steve Rosen was good as Uncle Fester, but like the press photos showed- his arms were flesh colored. Hollis Resnik was wonderful as Alice. I loved pretty much everything about her. However, her voice during waiting could have been stronger for the final notes. John Scherer was good as Mal, William Ryall was perfect as Lurch. Sara Kapner was a great Wednesday- She has a nice voice. Daniel DeLuca was a great Lucas- He added some character choices that added to the character. Michael Harp was a great Pugsley too.
The costumes actually worked for the most part and looked better on stage then in the pictures. Wednesday wore the yellow dress and Alice did do the yellow poem, but they changed the part about yellow being her favorite color. The set was great and the Muny’s rotating stage was showed off and added to the show. One thing that bugged me was the censorship- I get it, there are kids in the audience- but still. Examples- Alice: No, We’re in the middle or a game, so button your lips and sit your butt (Ass) down”. Fester: Look at that fat guy (SonBitch) go”. All in all though, it was a great night out- But I still find the song 'Happy/Sad' to be incredibly boring
