I saw the show at the Atlantic off-Broadway. After seeing it there, I decided not to see it in a bigger house on Broadway. My question though is what they do with the lighting on tour. Does it extend out into the house? It will be playing the Buell Theater here in Denver which is huge. We do have flourecent lights on our box seats which I wonder if they will use when the show gets here. (At least I think we still have them. They stopped using them after a while.)

At the Curran in SF, they did have the colored fluorescent lights attached to the mezzanine, facing the stage. (I can't remember if they were on the balcony as well.)

At the Ahmanson, I was too far back in the orchestra to see the lights on the mezz, but I could see everything on the stage from my seat and the lighting worked TREMENDOUSLY. Because the stage was bigger and taller, the lighting filled all of it so that it was MORE vibrant than before.

Also, great review! I agree with pretty much everything :)

I was fortunate to see both John Gallagher and Blake Bashoff on Broadway, and your review is right on. Bashoff had big shoes to fill when he replaced Gallagher and he, indeed, has made the role his own. I will get to see the show on tour in Feb. in Columbus, OH. I'm hoping he is still with the tour. There are rumors that he may leave after the west coast tour.

He is; Gerard Canonico is replacing him.

That's a bummer. I was disappointed by Canonico after having seen both Gallagher and Bashoff (both of whom I loved in the role).

Great review, Robert. One of my best friends will be seeing the show while it is in L.A. She doesn't see much theatre, but it's good to know she won't be disappointed!

Agree with this review 100%. I was lucky enough to nab a front row seat at the Ahmanson and the level of committment from every member of the cast really got to me. Sarah Hunt had tears streaming down her face in The Dark I Know Well and took some time to recover after she sat down. They were all totally into their moments. They were all wonderful.

Thanks guys.

As per the lighting question, there were two or three flourescents around the mezz, and lighting effects also danced off of the box seats.

And Mallardo, when I saw the show from stage on Broadway the actors were figiting a bit and making a few side conversations whilst the action was going on around them. This cast remained completely into the show at all times. And yeah, Sarah Hunt cried during her song when I saw it too. It was so touching.

Awh! I was hoping to see Bashoff again when the tour came to Chicago. I saw him on Broadway and his portrayal of Moritz was one of the most moving I have ever seen.

As of right now, it doesn't look like Gerard will not be replacing Blake on tour. Rumor has is that the boy who was supposed to replace Gerard on Broadway (and supposed to start the night after closing) will take over on tour.

Great review! It's nice to hear that there's still a good company of Spring Awakening around.

I spoke with Blake after the show and he said he's taking the tour one city at a time before deciding whether to continue or not.
