You can get a refund if this person is taking an unplanned hiatus from the show. When these people bought tickets they bought them with the understanding that they would be getting the whole package.
Azaria's departure is not exactly unplanned, but it wasn't mentioned early in the run and there STILL aren't specific dates. And, even if they don't get a refund...people WILL cancel. I can almost guarantee it. Think about what would happen if Nathan Lane took a hiatus from The Producers for four months when the show was only two months into its run. There's a very good chance that if people demand refunds...they'll get them.
Well, that may be, however I would still be very surprised if it is Williams who steps in to relieve Azaria.
I do agree that it's difficult to see him making his Broadway musical debut as a replacement. For all we know, this could just be a publicity ploy to keep people interested in the show and to prevent people bombarding Telecharge with refund requests.
Still...Williams might do it anyway. I'm sure he doesn't have a lot of time on his hands to do such a huge run...and I doubt he would be able to negotiate doing an original Broadway musical for only four months. He may see this as a great idea. Jumping right into a hit musical for a four month period. Ticket sales would go even more nuts for this show. It just might happen.
Well, you need someone who can do accents. Seinfeld has gotta be a no. That'd be like adding Jeff Foxworthy into the mix. Bring in all the Blue Collar guys...why not?
I'm totally joking. I vote Robin. Though a part of me wants a shakeup so Sieber can play the part, just cause I love him.
A couple questions:
1) When is Azaria leaving?
2) Isn't he returning? I thought it was a "leave."
Yes, Hank'll be back around Thanksgiving.
Kline!Kline!Kline!Kline!Kline!Kline!Kline!Kline!
Wow...I would SH** a brick.
A joyful brick.
when is he leaving?
At this point I might just wait...have a shot at actual seats instead of SRO...
Robin Williams as the French Taunter? Thats some good casting. Almost as good as Hank in the role, which was absolute brilliance.
If this happens, God will not even be able to get tickets & watch out for scalpers
The problem I see with Robin Williams is him doing it 8 times a week & sticking to a script as opposed to winging it. We shall see.....
I realize the valid problems presented here with Williams, but this man is a wonderfully-trained actor. If anyone has seen him with Steve Martin and F. Murray Abraham in lincoln center's Waiting for Godot a few years ago, you could see what I mean. Not one ad lib. No intentional scene stealing. Just honest, hillarious, touching acting. Now i know Spamalot is in a different ballpark than Beckett, but still, I think Williams has enough respect and theatrical knowledge to step nicely into an ensemble piece and thrive in it.
You're mentioning Michael McKean (who I adore by the way) made me think of an even more incredible replacement..... Chris Guest. My lord - that man can play ANYONE hysterically. Can you imagine him as the French Taunter? He'd never do it - but how I would love to see it!

Kevin Kline's one of my very favorite actors ever. In & Out is the reason I first became a fan of Greg's, which led to my knowing Greg and then to being his webmaster, so I am also very grateful to Mr. Kline! Anyway, he'd be great!
I saw Oliver PLatt and Hank Azaria yesterday at Joe Allens having a drink. Perhaps discussing a Lancelot replacement? Who knows...I have about as much evidence as Reidel does with "Robin Williams has seen the show several times"
