I had the opportunity to see the Rock of Ages tour yesterday at the Colonial Theater in Boston. I had comps for this show, and it was my first time seeing it. The theater was quite empty, but let me say that it was a Thursday matinee performance mostly for press.
I always avoided seeing this show because I heard so-so things about it and didn't care for the music. I didn't really like the idea of seeing a musical with extremely loud rock music and obnoxiously bright lights. Well, I certainly enjoyed it more than expected and recommend the show to anyone looking for a fun (and loud) night at the theater.
I'll agree with what I've heard regarding the plot line - nothing spectacular, predictable and written around the song selection. So don't go in expecting to be incredibly moved by the show. Now, I happened to go to a random matinee performance, so the audience was quiet, but I heard the night before audience members were dancing in the aisles. At times, people got into the songs and were waving around those fake lighters. I found myself pleasantly enjoying the music. It's one of those shows where I like the music better when I see it performed onstage rather than simply listening to it on the cast recording. Otherwise I'd just listen to the original.
Anyways, the cast was high energy despite the non-energetic audience. Rebecca Faulkenberry (Sherrie) was a standout and has a powerhouse voice, and I enjoyed her performance a lot. I also enjoyed Constantine's performance. Sometimes when a performer has performed a certain role for ages, they sort of phone in the performance, but Constantine looked like he loves being onstage. No complaints about the rest of the cast.
If you are debating checking it out, take it for what it is: a loud, fun rock concert musical. Nothing more, nothing less.
Has anyone else seen the tour? I know it just opened, but I'm interested on others' thoughts on the cast.
