Rocky Horror Flops on Broadway 1975

Rocky Horror Flops on Broadway 1975
'The Rocky Horror Show' opened on Broadway 35 years ago today, March 10th 1975.
It ran for just 45 performances at the Belasco Theatre, closing on 5th April.

It wouldn't be until the early 80s when the film version suddenly became a cult screening that American audiences took Rocky and Frank to their hearts.

A new staging was presented at The Circle In The square Theatre in 2000 and ran for a more respectable 437 performances.

***The London production opened on 19th June 1973 at the Royal Court Upstairs and closed at the Comedy Theatre on 13th September 1980 after 2960 performances.
This production is still high on the long running shows list for West End shows.

Always something to celebrate around her! LOL!

Actually the cult around the movie began in the late 1970's. I remember around 1978/79 Siskel and Ebert devoted an entire program to the film's popular midnight showings. They still happen regularly in Toronto.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

The real strong following of the movie was in the early 80s as even that itself was a box office disaster!.
