Posted: 1/1/05 at 8:46pmI've heard of it because Patrick Wilson was in a production of it once, but I've never heard anything from it.

This is not the Terrence Mann production with Patrick Wilson as Romeo. This is the Gerard Presgurvic musical that opened in the West End in 2002.
jackson992, you should listen to the original production of this musical, which was in French: "Roméo et Juliette - de la Haine à l'Amour". The music and the singers are 10x better.

Gerard Presgurvic allowed the British to re-compose his music so that a 10-piece orchestra could play it. Which, IMO, was a mistake. Originally in France (and every other place the show has been performed) they used pre-recorded music. The British version also left out some beautiful songs, the sets were bad, and so were most of the costumes.
The English version only lasted 4 months in the West End, whereas the French has become the most successful French speaking musical ever.
Here, check out this site about some of the productions (French, French Canadian Tour, Belgian, British, Netherlands Tour, Hungarian, Russian, and German). And if you go to the discography page, you can right click and save target as on the French DVD and watch the DVD advertisement. And if you do the same on the the CD covers, you can listen to some MP3 clips from those CD's.

I really found Romeo & Juliet AWFUL. The same with all of the french musicals. most are more like a concert than a theatre piece. The same author has done the musical "Gone with the wind". Very spectacular, but another bad idea with stupid songs.
BTW the most succesful musical in france was "notre dame de paris"... that was a huge hit! (horrible too, by the way!)
All the french musicals are published on dvd and are very easy to find, here in europe.

Actually, according to The British Theatre Guide, "The French original is the most successful French musical ever, having been seen by over a million people, both in Paris and on tour."
I personally didin't find RetJ (or Autant en Emporte le Vent...Cindy, Cendrillon 2002 I will give you because I thought that too) to be concert like? May I ask, what makes you think that? Maybe the huge stage and theatre are throwing you off? I mean, these aren't even sung through shows.
I find, during a ballad, the music to be very beautiful. You should re-listen to songs like "Un Jour", "J'ai Peur", "Le Poete", "Le Balcon", "Aimer", "Le Chant de l'Alouette", "Avoir Une Fille", "Sans Elle", "Le Poison", "Mort de Roméo", and "La Mort de Juliette".

Presgurvic's R&J (and all French musicals, for that matter) are very different from what we are used to on Broadway and even in the West End. In a sense, they are more like staged concerts rather than musicals. The music is canned, only the leads are mic'd, etc.
That being said, I do enjoy them. The English translation of R&J is absolutely terrible. Leave it to Don Black to mess something up like that. I do not understand why composers continue to hire him as a lyricist. Dracula is the most current proof of his *cough* talent.
The music and songs are far from "stupid."
A lot of the melodies are beautiful, especially the theme from Autant En Emporte Le Vent. Presgurvic has the knack for choosing actors with great voices and his only major mistake was in selecting his daughter to be the lead in Autant.
It seems that the French musicals just do not translate well into English.
Not sure why that is.
Very interesting.
