Posted: 7/23/13 at 12:43pmI have no problem with older actors in the roles if they can be convincingly young on stage.

I do. There is no way that Orlando Bloom can look like an 18-21 year old. The actions of Romeo are understandable if done by a boy just out of adolescence. But done by a full grown man in his 30's it makes the character either unstable or mentally and emotionally retarded.

Posted: 7/23/13 at 1:07pmYes, just like the "money grubbing" non-artistic RSC who brought a 34 year old Romeo and a 31 year old Juliet to New York in their acclaimed production at the Armory.

There is no question of great actors being able to handle it - Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline anyone, in the Public Theatre benefit - but the face, the build, the entire demeanor has to be extremely young for the play to make sense. Teenagers being bullied by their parents - requires teenagers in some credible sense of the word.

Posted: 7/23/13 at 1:55pmEh, the ages of the actors really doesn't bother me. Yes, ideally it would be nice to see a production where there are younger people in the lead roles, but it's Shakespeare- it's not like this will be the first or last time the ages in any of his plays has been strictly followed. And who knows, they could be great and the production could be wonderful. And if not, there will probably another production in NYC within five years, if not sooner.

They'll be another production running simultaneously with this one at Classic Stage Company, starring Elizabeth Olsen.

My revival question is this: Why did they use a damn photo shop of each of them as a show poster rather than doing an actual photo shoot with the two of them in the same room? It looks so tacky...fly them out or do whatever it takes to get them in the same room and take a really good photo!
Ok I'm done ranting...thanks!

The Classic Stage Companies production is cast appropriately.
It looks like next season will be the year of the miscast actor. Not only do we have Orlando Bloom doing a role he is 15-20 years too old to play, but we also have Denzel Washington playing a role he is 30 years too old to play ("Raisin in the Sun"). All we need now is for Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal to go back into "Rent" again and the season will be complete.
