I'm with Bella on this -- Rosario mentioned recently (somewhere) that "OMG, I can't believe I didn't know about all this when it came out; I can't believe I lived without this show for so long...I'm glad I'm a part of it now" or something.

not that it particularly matters. just thought I'd through my 2 cents in.

Totally agree with you, a little apprehensive about her comments concerning the fact she had to sing at the audition and that she wasn't a fan of the show previously. (Also, a little concerned about Jesse's comments about Chris being 'kinda conservative' and afraid to be daring.) However, Rosario looks the part. I recently seen Daphne in the film Flawless (with the gorgeous Wilson JH) and she looked really old in it. She's about 35 now, it would be ridiculous her playing a 18/19 yr old. Bring it on Rosario!

The rest of the cast is around thirty-five. Rumour says Daphne is older than the rest of them.

Why the apprehension? Regardless of what she thought she'd have to do at the audition, she was cast. By many accounts, she's got a lovely voice.

I didn't see the interview, but is it possible she meant that she didn't expect to have to sing at her first audition for the film? Anyone have a direct quote?

Maybe she went to the audition thinking that they only wanted to see her acting that particular day, but when she arrived they told her that they wanted to hear her sing something then and there, and she was surprised.......

Also, who cares if she wasn't a fan of the show before. She obviously is now. She also seems to know how much the musical means to the fans and the people involved, including the Larsons. In the interviews that she has given, it appears that she wants to do the story justice and wants the movie to be great. The rest of the cast has faith in her, so I think that should mean something to the rest of us. It sure puts me at ease.

I saw the interview, she said she had one voice lesson. So will they dub her singing in the film? How old is she anyway, she doesn't look that young, should have known singing was required for the audition. I'm sure she's a real sweetheart but in my opinion she is miscast, they should have used a true Broadway performer for the part.

The problem here is that people on tis board have the tendency to read too much into everything that is said.
All Rosario said in the interview was that the experience of having to audition for the movie "RENT" was very different from other auditions because it was for a musical and she was required to sing. She was apprehensive and at first went on the audition on a whim. She also stated she had no formal vocal training, she obviously gave it her best shot and impressed SOMEBODY because she got the role.

Daphne Rubin-Vega was someone who had no formal vocal training and was actually a minor pop singer when she won the role of "Mimi" in the original production, the part doesn't call for a singer of Maria Callas' caliber. We're talking "RENT" here not Bizet's "Carmen".

So will they dub her singing in the film?

She's doing her own singing.

Anyone who has any doubt on Rosario Dawson's singing ability and lives in the NYC area should just try to get their hands on some free tickets to "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" at the Delacorte in Central Park. Rosario is starring as "Julia" in this musical version and she's required to sing LIVE for six performances a week. Get back to us and let us know if the girl can carry a tune.

Guys-- first of all I was never doubting Ro's ability despite her lack of exposure to Rent. I was just saying that I'm pretty sure she wasn't really into it until she got cast. Musicnmath-- that interview was from the bway.com coverage of Bryant Park.

Also I agree with Kringas on this one. Daphne didn't have exactly have the most well-trained voice and she was great as Mimi-- she had the spunk and the personality which I think Ro has. I think she will make a fine Mimi.

maybe this is an incredibly racist comment of me to make, but isn't Mimi supposed to be a Latina ( when the spanish babies cry)?? Umm, isn't rosario not?

Rosario is of Puerto Rican-Cuban-African American-Native American descent. I think the Puerto Rican and Cuban part most certainly makes her a LATINA.

Now Scary Spice, Karmine Anders, Simone and countless other "Mimis" were NOT Latina.

So, what's your point?

Mimi be came a semi-strong heroine for me because of our similar backgrounds, i don't feel the same looking at rosario. The cast seems to be a wide spectrum of african american and caucasian with nothing in between for those of us who aren't

I don't know what you're getting at. What do you mean by "in between"? Because she's mixed? I have BIG NEWS FOR YOU: SO IS DAPHNE RUBIN-VEGA. So again, what is YOUR POINT?

I geuss some people arn't happy with the fact Rosi got picked over other Mimi's. I think she'll do fine. Oh god, i don't want to even imagen the whole cast being replaced, i'd die, right now..like drop DEAD!...RIGHT NOW.

It seems to me that people are grasping at straws, anything to use against the fact she was cast in this role.
People need to build a bridge and GET. OVER. IT.
