Rose Tattoo at Williamstown Theater

Just saw Marisa Tomei at the Williamstown Theater in the Rose Tattoo, which ended its run last Sunday. Any prospect of it coming to Broadway? Her performance was Tony caliber.

I was completely blown away by her. The play itself is not one of his best, but I really liked this production of it a lot.

It was a gem with Mercedes Ruehl and Anthony Lapaglia at CITS years ago. Tomei is great. How was Christopher Abbott?

I saw the Saturday evening performance. Tomei was spectacular. Tony caliber indeed. It's easily the best stage performance I've ever seen from her. I don't foresee any prospect for a commercial transfer of this production, but it would be great if Roundabout or Lincoln Center could pick it up.

Abbott was excellent; he and Tomei had great chemistry. The entire cast was mostly superb.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

A major difference, though, that should be taken into account, is that Fool For Love is a 4-actor, 1-set, 80-minute play. Cheap and easy to produce.

The Rose Tattoo has a cast of nearly 20, including children -- plus a live goat in this production. It's longer (2.5 hours) and has a more intricate set. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it would not be a cheap or simple production to remount.
