Good casting. The Playbill announcement mentions that Ruthie Henshall appeared in Curb Your Enthusiasm. Is that a forthcoming episode? Perhaps even the one with Cheyenne Jackson?

For those with access to the District Line it will be playing in Richmond before it hits the West End.

Does this mean that Ruthie's career is officially at a low-point ?

Blithe Spirit is nice though... they should bring in Angela Lansbury to reprise the role she played on Broadway.
Ruthie in Blithe Spirit seems awkward to me.
It's like when Sarah Brightman did Trelawny of the Wells

I think, if anything, Ruthie's career is NOT at a low point.

Since when does doing a Noel Coward play in the West-End constitute ones career hitting a low point?

Her star rose in Crazy For You. She Loves Me was a critical success, but not a commercial one and then things were bright again with Chicago.
In the last few years, Peggy Sue Got Married and Marguerite bommed completely.
Recently she returned to Chicago and now she'll be in Blithe Spirit.
Would she have done these last 2 if things were going swell ?

I saw Blithe Spirit on Broadway and it's good fun, though it feels kinda awkward seeing Ruthie in it.

I believe her run in Chicago on Broadway has been extended so clearly it's a success. Meanwhile, as with many other performers associated with musicals, she wants to remind people that she is first and foremost an actress. What better venue?

I don't understand your reasoning, philitalia. Ruthie's playing a coveted role in a Noel Coward classic with Alison Steadman (National Treasure!) and two very successful TV actors, Hermione Norris and Robert Bathurst.

If anything, this project might open up new possibilites for Henshall in terms of straight acting work.

Ruthie Henshall's had a pretty golden career for a performer with little screen exposure (Dancing on Ice wasn't good exposure imo). I don't think she's quite a box office name, but she hasn't really had the opportunity to become one (Marguerite and Peggy Sue aren't very good pieces). And considering how many actors are slated for not equalling the original performers in revivals, Ruthie's track record in revivals is enviable.

I wonder how Blithe Spirit will affect her concert dates in November?

First of all : I love Ruthie Henshall. The only criticism I would permit myself to have is that she's been pulling the same "funny faces" for more than 15 years (and it doesn't matter whether she's singing Sondheim, Kander & Ebb, or others).

I didn't critise her as a performer, but her career seems to have reached an anti-climax.
Would she have have returned to Chicago in the WestEnd and would she have been in Blithe Spirit IF her career had been going differently ?
I'm not critising her performance in Chicago, but returning to a part she created in the WestEnd after 13 years or so can't be a good sign.
If I were an actor I would not like to be stuck in the same role for that amount of time.

Blithe Spirit is good fun. I saw the 2009 Broadway production, but it's not exactly Shakespeare, is it ? ... and the best part in that play goes to Alison Steadman

I'm interested this is planning to come back into the West End at all at the moment - it's only 5 (I think) years since it was last in the West End - with Penelope Keith at the Savoy. I really enjoyed that production and will try and get to see this as a contrast.

I'm agreed that Henshall's an interesting choice philitalia - but can she still pull the funny faces? She looked remarkably.... still facially shall I say when I saw her on Dancing on Ice (admittedly that's nearly 2 years ago because she wasn't on the last series.

I've not seen Alison Steadman live in person so to speak - so I'll go for that alone amd you're right - she has the best part!

I disagree. I am an actor, andlet me tell you - that is exactly what i'd do.

I don't think Ruthie's career has ever been better. The general public recognise her from Dancing on Ice, her perfomance in Les Misérables has been viewed by thousands more people due to the Susan Boyle phenomenon, and she's lighting up the West-End and Broadway in Chicago. She has her own tour which is sellig well also.

Marguerite beig a flop says nothing about Ruhie's career. Drowsy flopped but would you say Elaine Paige's career hasgone downhill? I wouldn't.

I think this is a wonderful opportunity for Ms. Henshall, and I don't understand what would posess you to think otherwise...

Actors have to eat and pay bills and times are hard.
Being in Blithe Spirit is not a disgrace, but it's not exactly much of a challenge for an actor.
I'm not saying it's Ruthie's fault.
Fact is that there are no new shows currently in the WestEnd (or coming soon) that need leading ladies like Elaine Paige, Ruthie Henshall, ... that's the essence of it.
Being in Dancing on Ice ... well, let's not get into those kind of shows that are full with fading stars who participate because they need the exposure.

If you really think Ruthie's career has never been better, then think again. Her career peaked between 1993 and 1997 (Crazy for you, She loves me and Chicago). I'm actually old enough to have seen her in all these shows.

Don't get me wrong, I do like Ruthie and I'd love to see her again as a leading lady creating a new part in a great show.

Blithe Spirit is good fun. I saw the 2009 Broadway production, but it's not exactly Shakespeare, is it ?

It's a crowd-pleaser of a play by a popular (and dead) English playwright, one of the characters is a ghost, and it gets trotted out pretty frequently yet people are always queueing up to see it when it makes an appearance. Apart from the name on the poster, how is that NOT Shakespeare? Ruthie Henshall joins BLITHE SPIRIT

I think you're being very mean to Blithe Spirit. If you think about it, it's WAY more of a challenge to do something perceived as frothy well than it is to do something more generally considered high-brow. I mean, you're aware that comedy is really frickin' difficult to pull off, right? :P

Oops, now I've angered Ruthie and Blithe Spirit fans Ruthie Henshall joins BLITHE SPIRIT

Blithe Spirit is a nice little comedy and I had a nice night when I saw it, but it's nothing earth-shattering and ... I'm sorry to say ... it's dated

Talking about Noel (purists, I know Noel is with 2 dots on the "e", but this keyboard doesn't have them)Coward, I much prefer Design For Living

"If you really think Ruthie's career has never been better, then think again. Her career peaked between 1993 and 1997 (Crazy for you, She loves me and Chicago)."

It depends on how you assess success. As you mentioned, She Loves Me wasn't a hit, yet it won RH an Olivier. After Chicago, Broadway beckoned, including a second stint in Chicago (was that a comedown?) and another stint in Miss Saigon (again, a comedown?), and of course, playing opposite Carol Burnett and George Hearn in a Sondheim revue.

The West End hasn't provided as many fine opportunities, but I think that Blithe Spirit, especially with this cast, is a better vehicle than the sub-par Peggy Sue/Marguerite. Madame Arcati may be the traditional scene-stealing role, but if played well, Elvira is a central, sexy, fun presence in the piece.

Perhaps I'm misreading your comments, but it almost sounds to me like your equating RH playing in Blithe Spirit with say, touring in 'Allo 'Allo: Live on Stage! (?!)

And I must say, I love that, for Henshall, "the play's the thing". I saw her recently as Roxie, and her performance was light years ahead of her first stint (I wish they re-recorded her solos for itunes or something, to preserve her 2nd Roxie stint).

My comments weren't meant negative towards Ruthie. As I said I'd love to see her again in a new role.

I also said the essence was that currently in the WestEnd there are no new musicals for leading ladies like Ruthie.

I also said that I saw the recent Broadway production of Blithe Spirit and that I enjoyed it.

A great play.
I just want to see that shrill voiced woman in it!

I NEVER attributed any of these factors to Ruthie. On the contrary.
Read my comments with care.

You're younger than me and maybe youth interprets these career moves differently, but to this OLD CYNIC her career is NOT moving forward. However, again, I never said it was her fault.
