Wright is actually depicting more than one character, or so someone in the production team told me when I asked the same question. Supposedly hey use to specify each and every single character in the playbill during the Atlantic run...perhaps someone with a physical copy can attest to this...

Wright is playing Hanschen in that scene. When his father "knocks" on the door he yells out "HANSCHEN!"

So that settles that debate.

The reason that he is masturbating to Desdemonda in Act 1 and then getting it on with Ernst in Act 2 is because that's what was written in the original play. He is also feeling violent toward her and fantsizes about killing her. Clearly he is very "confused." I think with Ernst he enjoys the "power" that he holds over him more than anything.

In Act 2 Wright does play another character. All of the male cast members, except for Gallagher, Groff & Spinella play reformatory boys for one scene.

Hahah reading this thread you'd think everyone thought sexuality was a black and white thing.

But anyway, that's besides the point. Hanschen isn't necessarily seducing a boy because he's gay; he's power-hungry and is so self-centered he just assumes he is admired by all.
