In the TonyAwards.com Poll, "Seasons of Love" beat such classics as "THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM," "WHAT I DID FOR LOVE," "CABARET," and "I DREAMED A DREAM."
That's bullsh*t. "Impossible Dream" or "What I Did For Love" should have won!!
that will surley piss a lot of people off. mostly becasue it is a new song and people love to put the older one's on "they dont make em like the used to" pedestals.
im not sure that there is a "best showtune of all time", and im not sure that its seasons of love if there is, but its still a great song.
and if he's still alive 20 years from now, Tony Bennett might be singing "Seasons of Love" at the Tony Awards while Mary J. Blige sings "It Sucks to Be Me"
And I will be crying.
They were supposed to announce this during the Tony's telecast. What happened?

Also look at the "fans" picks for this years Tony Awards. The "fans" called for Wicked to win 9 awards. It just proves that 16 years olds have too much time on their hands.
Who gives a rat's patootie about this?

To ask what the best showtune of all time is, is like asking who the best comedian of allt ime is- inpossible. Okay, so older songs are great, but how long does a GREAT newbie have to wait to be placed under that category, when they are excellent to start?
Amen, Frailty.
hmmmm... I don't know what I'd pick, but probably not that. The whole question is too subjective anyway.

Yeah. I'm not saying I'd pick that song, but I mean the subject in general. The variety of answers or options is way to braod to pick one.
Exactly what I'm saying. It's a completely ridiculous question. Altogether too broad.
Zola you're on a Broadway board. If you don't care about stuff like this, don't read the thread.

There's no one answer to this question. SOL is a great song, no doubt about it, but to say it is defintively the best isn't true.

i have no idea what the best showtune of all time is and i have no idea what the criteria would be, but I do know that it's not Seasons of Love.
the demographic on these online Broadway boards and polls isn't representative of the actual theatregoing community. it's representative of cross-section of Broadway fans, mainly young people, who happen to be good with computers, or at least the internet. and judging by my grandmother's attempts to use the internet, that excludes a HUGE portion of the theatregoing community from our discussions. and that's how we wind up with such ridiculous poll results. i swear, if i knew nothing about broadway and just happened upon some of these boards, i would think that rent and wicked were the only shows playing!
