I'm thinking about seeing this. I really like her as a performer. Is it worth it?
Ripped - I saw this last night and can't stress how much you should try and see it before it closes at the end of the month. To know that Jeannette Baryardelle wrote the entire piece herself and performs every role is incredible. She is basically a freak of nature, in the best possible way.
The performance is intimate, for sure, considering the size of the Ars Nova space, but the quality is high. The lighting, costumes, props, and sound design are top notch - Jeannette leverages lighting, costumes, and props to transform into each character in the play - from the title character, to her mother, school teacher, best friend, boy friend, and even her transgendered girl friend - seamlessly. It's a feat to see and hear her switch so deftly between parts considering the emotional arc of the show.
There are certainly a few areas worth tweaking, a few gags that go on a little too long, a song or two that features gratuitous belting, etc. but they are completely overshadowed by the quality of the evening.
Go. I don't think you'll regret it. I'm going to try to go back before the end of the month.
