SHREK (Sutton ) on The Today Show

I've said this many times, but God that Fiona costume is unflattering.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

She's been in a tower since she was five!

A little known fact is that in the original screenplay, Pan's Labyrinth was Pan's FLAByrinth. Hmmmmmmm...glad they changed it.

I think that most women, myself included, would look bad in that dress.

I never got this: If she's been in that tower 15 years, than how come her dresses fit so well?

I assume you've seen them both, jordangirl? How do they differ?

I thought they were using Leah for pretty everything press related.

Yeah, I have. Rachel just has a weird way of saying "story" that is kind of like, "HUH?" It's almost like she says "starry". It's minor, but just one of those personal preference things. Rachel has a little more of the little girl cute thing going while Leah ready a tiny bit older.

I would think a little older would be better as I've seen the Fiona character as a strong-willed, smart gal who has decided what she wanted and how she wanted it early on (especially with all that time in the tower). It will be interesting to see which on appears on the cast recording. Leah is the one they had in Seattle, right? Was Rachel in Seattle as well or did they cast her in NYC?

Spork, I agree. I think the dress makes Sutton look chunkier than the girl actually is. And I know Sutton is skinny as hell. But it is true to the film and part of it is the color and fabric choice, I think. I like green a lot, but this green fabric isn't working as well here. As a gal who dabbled in costume design in college, I'd have to think about what I'd do differently.

I think Fiona's dress is pretty. "I Know It's Today" is my favorite song that I heard from the "Shrek" musical, so I am glad that is the one they sang. All of them were great; the youngest Fiona is so expressive in her face and voice.

Yeah, I think the color is pretty. Most likely it's the fabric and possibly the cut. It flattens the chest and thickens the waist. I also don't like the neckline either for some reason.

I'd love to hear about what you'd do differently. I don't have any costume design experience, myself. re: SHREK (Sutton ) on The Today Show

Leah was in Seattle, alternating shows with Keaton Whittaker (who, IMO was excellent).

I've only seen the show once, and I saw Rachel. I wish that they brought Keaton Whittaker to Broadway. I heard audio rips of the show and she is absolutely fantastic. She definitely had the strongest voice of all three of the young Fiona's thus far. Leah definitely seemed nervous in this performance, but vocally, she's improved. When I saw Shrek, I thought Rachel sounded absolutely terrified. Maybe it was because she hadn't been doing this a long time, but her nerves definitely had an impact on her voice.

Edited to add: Marissa O'Donnell is always on her A-game. She is a delight. I just wish there was more for her! Updated On: 12/9/08 at 05:09 PM

I'd love to hear about what you'd do differently. I don't have any costume design experience, myself.

Taking another look at the video, I think one of the problems is the two different greens they used in the dress and bodice. I'd have to see them in person, but they don't look too different, so they are different enough to offer some, but not nearly enough contrast.

In the film, Fiona had gold trim on her neckline and at her waist to more properly define both areas. Here, the green just messes together. Also, I am not too fond of the slight sweetheart neckline; I'd have stayed with the square neckline.

Those are very good points.

I think the bodice itself needs to go. It doesn't conform to the figure, making her torso look thicker and pressing down the chest.

Edit: There are some not-bad "real life" adaptations of Fiona's dress that I think would be better than the musical one, actually.

I LOVE this song, and was def excited to see this song on the show. I think my favorite part, though was the interview. I thought it was so cute when Marissa said "How many kids can say they are a young Sutton Foster?" I loved how Sutton like hit her like she was modest. It was a sweet moment. You can tell Sutton really loves Marissa and Leah. Marissa is such a sweet, talented girl. I think both her and Leah has big things in the future, they really do act like young Sutton's!

I am glad that they used Leah too. I've heard Rachel's version, and saw Leah live. I love Leah so much more. Rachel just seems ... off. I too agree that they should have kept Keaton. [But I also wish they would have kept Chester and Kecia, but things happen.] And about the cast recording, my fingers are crossed for Leah, but it would be cool if they could somehow use both. It is Rachel's Broadway debut too.

As for the Tonys, I would LOVE it if they did I Know It's Today, just think how huge that would be for Leah (assuming they use her) and Marissa! But I personally would like to see Morning Person. It's a huge tap number, and that one really shows off Sutton's amazing skills! It's a fun ensemble number, and they could easily add the other main actors to it. How awesome would it be if they ended up doing I Think I Got Ya Beat? haha.

I just noticed something about the performance on The Today Show. I found a full performance of "I know its today" and the part at the end seems different. in the video I saw Sutton says 4,823. In the Today performance she says 8,423. They must have added some years on since the Seattle shows..

But the performance nevertheless was lovely!! I really need to get to NYC to see some shows! I have never been (thus my member name) but I am a big fan of musical theater

I've gotta say that I find the green costume very tacky and baggy...I wish they would have stuck closer to the film. Case in point:

I think it's because 4,823 is only 13 years, where 8,423 is 23, which is more appropriate, because Fiona is more like 28 or 29 than 18 or 19.

getting back to the tony telecast question I think the number will really come down to who gets nominated. If Chris Sieber gets a nod for Supporting Actor *knocks wood* I suspect we'll be seeing "Things are looking up in Duloc" Although there is more than enough time to put brian through the makeup (its a 3 hour telecast, it takes an hour and a half, so theoretically he can be ready anywhere past the half way point

I saw Rachel perform tonight, and I thought that she was wonderful. Not exceptional by any means, but adorable and funny. The audience loved her.

And then I heard this exchange at the stage door-
Guy: Oh weren't you on The Today Show today?
Rachel: No, that was my counterpart.

I just loved hearing this tiny eight year old say "counterpart" like that. I couldn't stop smiling.
