"China on Broadway, a partnership between Nederlander Worldwide and the Eastern Shanghai Cultural Film and Television Group, will present Soul of Shaolin — a spectacle involving dance, acrobatics and martial arts — at Broadway's Marquis Theatre for a limited engagement Jan. 13-31, 2009, Variety reported.
An opening night is set for Jan. 15. Soul centers on a boy raised by monks to become a Shaolin kung fu master, according to the trade. This marks the first time the People's Republic of China will play producer on Broadway.
A cast of 33 Chinese artists is expected. The production will play the Marquis between engagements of Irving Berlin's White Christmas (closing Jan. 4, 2009) and 9 to 5: The Musical (starting previews April 7, 2009)..."

The Special Event category for the Tonys this year is going to be really interesting. I think it's great that these cool limited runs will be playing Broadway theaters. I saw the Shaolin monks years ago and would be interested in going again.
The Marquis has had more tenants than Miss Mona's Brothel.
Some were actually hits.

Is "White Christmas" considered a revival or a "Special Event."

I would say "Special Event."

Why would it be a revival? It hasn't played on Broadway before.

"Little Shop of Horrors" hadn't played Broadway before, but was considered a musical. The show has been around long enough, I think, that it wouldn't be considered a "new musical."
I don't think it matters how long a show has been around. If it hasn't been on Broadway before then it is new. If it has then it is a revival.
ASSASSINS never played on Broadway, only Off-Broadway. And the 2004 production was considered a "revival."

Thanks ljay - and like I previously stated, "Little Shop" was considered a revival, and it had only played off-Broadway prior to it's "revival." I think "White Christmas" has been around long enough, and playing multiple engagements out-of-town makes it a "revival."
It will be considered a new musical.

"White Christmas" was a film. Turned into a musical. That began out of town and has now found its way to Broadway.
It is a NEW musical.
WHITE CHRISTMAS is a new musical.
This is the original production, with the same director, same concept, essentially same cast.
LITTLE SHOP and ASSASSINS were considered revivials because they had already entered the musical theatre canon. WHITE CHRISTMAS, despite a few regional productions, has not.

Also, don't forget that White Christmas hasn't played New York, while Assassins and Little Shop had.

Im glad that some people will get to be employed because of the show. Howaver, I will not be seeing it.
I have the opportunity to get discount seats.
Should I venture to the Marquis for this one, or not?
Is it worth it? Is it purely just 'martial arts'.
I'm a fan of mixed-martial arts, so that's thinking out loud.
A limited engagement should be interesting to have in NY.
Anyone know what the PLAYBILL (if any) will look like?
Assassins and Little Shop both had high profile NYC runs. White Christmas has never been seen in the city. It's a New Musical.

Bobby, way to bring up a really old thread on a topic that was already discussed and concluded. But thanks for the input. Always needed.
