re: SOUVENIR

Hey maddog, welcome to the boards. I didn't take your message as being a shill! You loved the show and wanted to share. There is nothing wrong with that (I've been doing the same with my favorite THE WOMAN IN WHITE) I have family coming into town this weekend and after much consideration I think I'll take them to see SOUVENIR. I'm a big Judy Kay fan so I've wanted to see this for some time now. Thanks for the recommendation.

Few questions:
Is this a play or a musical? I'm pretty sure it's a play but Judy Kaye performs quite a few songs right?

Is it a comedy or a drama?

Thanks!

re: SOUVENIR

It's a play with music (Kaye's character performs several operatic pieces -- BADLY -- to piano accompaniment) which is basically a comedy with a few poignant moments.

re: SOUVENIR

I watched the broadway.com preview, and it looks absolutely wonderful.

Judy Kaye seems completely in the role, and is histerically funny...

I think I'm the only one who thought this show was just ok. I thought after the whole joke of her singing badly sunk in, they really didn't have any other jokes. It was really a one joke play. Her performance was amazing though.

re: SOUVENIR

I am going to echo Margo for a moment here.

I went this weekend to see this show again after having seen it at the York.

I had forgotten how funny the show is, and I enjoyed it even more the second time.

Judy Kaye and Donald Coreen are nothing less than terrific in this odd love story. Judy is beyond terrific. She gives a TONY worthy performance. The play could use some trimming. I believe the last 30 minutes [no spoilers here] were expanded for the Broadway production.

The reason the show is in the Lyceum is because of the acoustics. The set pushes the playing forward, and neither is miked.

This comedic love story is one of the most enjoyable shows playing on the boards this season.

Friday night, 11/25, the Orchestra and Mezzanine appeared to be packed and the audience howled with laughter throughout.

I say, "don't miss it."

re: SOUVENIR

I went last weekend, my first time since seeing it at the York last December. I completely agree with Margo's and Jose's comments. This show has only gotten better over the course of the year.

Judy Kaye's performance is a thing of wonder. Truly a magical character study. Donald Corren is very good as Cosme, if a bit hammy. A vast improvement over Jack F. Lee, who played the role at the York.

Last Saturday night, the orchestra was about 75% full and the mezzanine was a little less than half-full. They didn't even bother to open the balcony. Sad. I really hope this show finds an audience.

re: SOUVENIR

it's a great theater for the show....they're not even using microphones.

i had a ball, although i think it can use a lot of trimming here and there. the end was heartbreaking and chilling.
