Saw it again last night and found it to be even funnier than it was Off-Broadway. Part of that is due to the recasting of Donald Corren in the role Jack Lee played at the York. Corren is a real actor and manages to find all manner of laughs, nuance and touching moments that Lee couldn't. The play as a whole seems much stronger with him in the part. Additionally, Judy Kaye is, if anything, even funnier than she was before. This may be the single most hilarious performance that I have seen on stage since I saw Dame Maggie Smith in LETTICE & LOVAGE a decade ago. She deserves the Tony. Not sure if the play will still be around at Tony time (there were tons of empty seats in the orchestra last night), but if not, let's hope she's not forgotten.
While I think the text could do with a bit of pruning here and there (I think that it should ideally run 90 minutes, no intermission, rather than two hours and 20 minutes with one intermission), this, nevertheless is probably the funniest play in town at the moment, so I recommend that everyone go -- you'll have a blast.
