Lady: I understand what you are saying it just seems that more often than not, when I post that I did not like Spamalot I'm jumped all over by people claiming I didn't understand it or just don't get python humor. I say yes, everyone is entitled to post what they want.
I enjoyed Spamalot, but it was not anywhere near one of my favorite musicals. I have heard about those early days of musical theatre, the vaudeville style shows that Margo mentioned, and have never been intrigued by them.
I still find all but one or two songs on the score unlistenable.
"Rot or Bee or Light over Lot" although I still think Lot is going to win.

Which, admittedly, isn't fair to you. I would never argue with someone who said he or she didn't appreciate the show, for whatever reason. It's fruitless and - depending on how it's done - even rude. Sometimes it seems there's a lack of respect on both sides - people who like the show being overly defensive, and people who *don't* like the show being overly broad in their attack ("I didn't like the show" is a lot different than "This show sucks.").

Very legitimate Lady, and I must say that I can see why many people liked Spamalot, it just doesn't do it for me.
I think that many of us on both sides get side swiped by broad atacks and then get defensive. I honestly want to find out what people love so much about Spamalot. I fully expected to love the show and it just didn't click for me.

"I honestly want to find out what people love so much about Spamalot. I fully expected to love the show and it just didn't click for me."
And I really *didn’t* expect to love the show, as I’m not a Monty Python fan at all. However, I did, and I don’t know if I can really explain why - perhaps going in with relatively low expectations helped! I’ve been a huge fan of Tim Curry’s for many years now, so his presence was certainly a major attraction for me, but that wouldn’t have been enough (I’ve certainly been disenchanted with more than a few of his projects over the years, and that’s being kind). Of course, one problem is that there probably isn’t anything harder to explain than why one finds something funny.
The humor was silly and smart all at once, and it appealed to me. I found the music infectious and the lyrics clever. Most of all, I loved every one of the performers - not only those I was already familiar with, but also those I’d never encountered before but definitely hope to encounter again (i.e. folks like Sara Ramirez and Christian Borle). None of that can really serve as an explanation, since you saw pretty much the same thing as I, but reacted to it differently. All I can say is I walked out on a high, feeling as if I’d just had over two hours of pure, uncomplicated, unadulterated fun – and it looked to me as if the people on stage were having every bit as much fun as I. Had to love that, too.

Funny that your explaination is exactly how I felt about Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which I had really low expectations of going in. I wound up having a blast and enjoying all of the performances, like the ones by Jbara and Gettlefinger, who I had not seen before.
I think that was a key factor for me with both show, the expectations, I could recite all the scenes from Holy Grail already and somehow, Spamalot just did not live up to my expectations of it. I am thinking I may have seen it n an off night though, because many people speak of how much fun the cast seemed to have and I did not get that at all.
I'm glad you, and many others, enjoy it so much. I think we can both have our big simple fun shows and be happy!

What happened to your penguins???
I saw "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" the night before I saw "Spamalot", and I really enjoyed that one, too. I hadn't seen the movie, so again I didn't have any particular expectations one way or the other, except that audience reviews here seemed very positive. I loved everyone in the cast, and had a lot of fun with it. I don't know if I enjoyed it *quite* as much as I did "Spamalot", but I had a great time and considered it time - and money - well spent (no small thing because I paid full price for the ticket!). So on that we can definitely agree.

I would define it as HILARIOUS, and better than the movie. It could've been worse, the show could have had no plot like the movie and no ending, but it has a plot and an ending.
