SPAMALOT QUESTION **MAJOR SPOILER**#1

Posted: 10/23/09 at 5:31pm

So what would happen if the audience member who was "sitting on the grail the whole time" refused to go up on stage in embarrassment, or was in the bathroom, or left early?

Has there been any reported flubs at that moment?

Does anyone come up to that person to warn them before the show?

Better yet, what if they take the grail and 5 minutes prior to that part in the show, they go off to the bathroom with grail in hand?

It's actually in Patsy's costume (or bag), I believe. It's never under the person's seat.

Well damn. That makes sense I guess.

I would assume since there is actually nothing at the seat, they would just move onto the next closest seat.

So for example, if the grail is located at A101, they may move to whoever is sitting at A102 or A103. Maybe even B101 or AA101 if there is one. They can always improvise.

They could always improvise and move onto another seat as well if someone is embarrassed. You can't force someone, so what are you going to do?

I think the guy playing Patsy tries to make sure the person in the usual seat would be okay with it as he goes down to the audience. Besides what's already been mentioned, there's also the possibility that it'd be a little kid in that seat, an older person who'd have trouble making it onstage, someone with crutches, etc...

I wouldn't call any of this a 'major spoiler', considering Spamalot has been closed for months...

But the tour JUST closed this month.

So? This show will probably end up in community and regional theaters. Or they may decide to tour again.

I hate how people assume just because something has closed, you can spoil the show for other people. Doesn't hurt to have it in the subject.

I still wouldn't consider it a major spoiler to the people on this website, though.

I mean, A101 was always booked solid, so it can't have been that much of a secret anyway.

Better safe than sorry. There are always random people who stumble onto this website.

On tour it was D101.

I would consider it a spoiler, but not a major one.

I thought they changed it from night to night to make the seat thing more of a surprise for those who did catch onto the joke. Or was that only on Broadway (to avoid having to haul around multiple props on the road)?

When I saw the show a second time, The woman was too embarresed and King Arthur said "Oh, cmmon. It's not that bad". She finally did and looked nervous as hell.

On Broadway, they eventually alternated between A101, B101, C101, and D101, because people were trying to get A101 in order to get on stage. Scalpers were buying up that seat (and the one next to it) for months in advance, and selling them for a fortune.

IF that did ever happen, then maybe the actors would go TO the person in the seat instead of the other way around. Just make things more funny or something.
