Excuse me, Diva? No, it's my firm belief though that you can't have an opinion on a show unless you sit through the entire thing. I mean, of course, you CAN go around running your mouth off after seeing Act 1, but then you look a little uninformed because you didn't really see the entire thing. If the OP wasn't reviewing the "entire" thing, he/she should have written the title as "SPIDERMAN - Act 1 - thurs 1/20." But he/she did not. The OP obviously wanted to hate it, so they couldn't get past that when they watched it which is quite common on these boards and a little sad. It's also becoming tiring of having to read tirade after tirade on how awful this show is. Take your money and go see something else.

The show isn't great - but I actually enjoyed parts here and there of Act 1. Act 2 was a mess, and yes, I read that there was a new ending. I guess you missed this article (http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/19/a-new-finale-for-spider-man/). I intend to go back sometime after opening to see the finished product (should it ever open!).

A show cannot be judged based only on one of its two acts. I had the same reaction based on seeing the whole thing, but I agree a show cannot be held on its merits if only seen as half of a whole.

Perhaps not, but you can judge one act of a show based on seeing that one act. And in the case of this show, it sort of makes sense since the two acts have completely different plots. And if he were to say how wonderful he thought the first act was, but had to leave due to illness or whatnot, I bet the issue wouldn't have come up.

What sticks in my craw is the "I hated this show, which means you'll hate it, too!" attitude. State your opinion, but don't assume everyone has your taste. It's nothing more than narcissism. If a show interests me, I'll go see it. I almost missed Women on the Verge after reading the reviews and opinions on this board. Luckily, I trusted my own instincts and I'm so glad I did.

My second response was quite chill, thank you, TD :) I wasn't condemning, I was calling out the unfully formed opinion of the OP who posted this "review" as one of the whole show, despite the fact that he/she said inside the review that was only act one. He/she could have titled the post correctly thus saving my having to click on this link to read a another outraged theatre snobs take on "act one of spider-man because act one was so bad that i just couldn't stand the thought of having to sit through act 2!" If you really hated the first act that much, shouldn't you have better things to do than to write a paragraph on a Broadway message board about how much you hated it?

I mean, still, it just baffles my mind that people walk out of shows today an entire act early and think they can go yapping about how awful it was. You didn't see the whole show. It's just mind boggling to me. I'm sorry if it's not anyone else here.

Again, I know this show is FAR from perfect. I'm still waiting for Taymor & Co to clean it up. They keep SAYING they will, but nothing ever changes.

How is that baffling? In most cases, when a person leaves at intermission, it is because they didn't enjoy the first act to the extent that they did not want to waste their time watching any more. The yapping occurs when they explain why they left. It makes perfect sense. I've never left a Broadway or West End show during intermission, but I've done so with many tours and regional productions (and a big Man of La Mancha revival in Madrid). Do you believe that if someone walks out of a show at intermission they simply shouldn't be allowed to tell anyone that the did so or why? That would be far more baffling.

No, they should tell people that they're opinion isn't fully formed of whatever show it is because they left at intermission. The only show that I've ever left at intermission of was Walmartopia and I didn't go around screaming about how bad the first act was afterward. I also say STFU to people who go around proclaiming how bad a show is based on what they've "heard" because they haven't actually seen it yet.

And Mister Matt: I agree with your sentiments re: the "I hate this show so you will too!" mindset. It's aggravating.

But you had every right to do so. You simply say, "I only saw the first act, so I can only tell you how much I hated that". There is a huge difference between criticizing an entire show without having seen the whole thing and criticizing the part you saw. I left a tour of Hair before intermission just after "Donna" because everything up to that point had been disastrous. I can express my personal opinion about everything I saw, but I wouldn't say anything regarding any part of the show after that number. I mean, what do you say?

"How did you like the show?"

"I left at intermission."

"Why?"

...

You are allowed to answer the question just as you are allowed to form an opinion of what you saw.

Immaturity. "OMG I heard it was so BAD" is as meaningless as "OMG I heard it was AWESOME". The immature response to Spider-Man happened the moment the show was announced. I ignore all that crap. I heard Spring Awakening was AMAZING. I hated it.

Like I said in one of my past posts, it would've been helpful if the OP stated in the title of this thread that it was only their disgruntled thoughts on Act 1 - instead of making it appear that this was going to be a thorough and well-thought out review, instead of an angry and poorly written one paragraph about their thoughts on only half of the show.

I'm a huge fan of the show, and though the hate bothers me to no end, this is pretty much a direct attack on a fan like me. I go to Broadway multiple times a month. I see plays and musicals, and I can't stand spectacles like Wicked and The Lion King. Theatre is my life, and I know a lot about it.
I've seen the show 5 times because I love the story, choreography, sets, and a lot of the music. Every time I go I get something new out of it. The story may not be easy for everyone to understand, and I get that, but I love it.
Go on attacking the show like many others, but generalizing every Broadway fan is out of line.

I know a lot about theatre and I wouldn't call it "terrible". What I saw definitely has potential of being entertaining and thrilling. It just needs a lot more work than they can put into it at this point.

I wanted to like it. I went in with an open mind. By intermission I was numb. No, I didn't leave, but that was mostly because I had struck up a lovely conversation with the couple sitting next to me, and we decided to stick it out together. I would like that hour of my life back.

The OP did nothing wrong, he didn't hide the fact that he only saw act one and didn't say a single word about act two.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I agree with you. What I meant was anyone who knows theater is aware that the book is mess, the plot all over the place, the music is forgettable, no character development, and huge sets and spectacle to mask what is really wrong with the show.

I wasn't there last night, but a theater loving neighbor was and all they could do was gush about..... the sets. And that was the only decent thing she had to say about it.

I've got to believe people are going to see this hoping to see a catastrophe much like people who watch NASCAR feel the anticipation thrill of a possible wreck or flipped car. I have two Trekkie friends who are huge diehard fans of anything Comic, Stan Lee or Spiderman related and they have no intentions of seeing the show. If you can't get a diehard SciFi con goin'-William Shatner lovin', Star Wars Christmas Special sloberin'- still with their parents livin' fan to attend, then you know it's bad.

I was so bored by the first I, left. I said I was only writing about the 1st Act and that's what I did. It is a show that started out with many troubles. but has evolved into a very enjoyable show for a lot of people. Certainly not high-brow, but very enjoyable.
